I loved this a lot. I love Dean's pov and the ending did in fact surprise me, that it was Dean's pov after all!!
I've always disliked the way Dean's coat fits him (sacrilege! all hail Dean's coat!) but I appreciate what it means to him and why he wears it (I have several of my Dad's old coats and they mean a lot) -- so I imagine that the Kid has a similar rationale.
I think Dean lost because in his heart he wanted the kid to win. :D
Ha! This is great! The narrator sounds like a cocky sumbeetch but I never clued in that the narrator was Dean until Sam said it. The banter was perfect. And speaking as a pool player, you captured the feel of a hustle, which is impressive.
My only quibble is not terribly important. Pool players don't let someone else break when they've got the table. Challenger racks, winner on the table breaks - every time. That threw me, but I doubt anyone else will notice it (unless they also play pool).
Unless Dean was feeling sorry for the kid and was bending the rules to give him a break? Would that be allowed?
I will certainly keep that information in mind for the next time someone is playing pool in one of my stories, though--thanks for the correction. And I'm glad you could overlook the error in favor of the story!
Will the mighty gods of pool visit hellfire in their wrath? No, certainly not, nor will everyone in the bar gasp, clutch their pearls and plot to beat Dean up out by the dumpsters. It's just one of those things that Does Not Happen, Because There Are Rules. Pool has highly technical etiquette, what you get if Miss Manners were to overdose on testosterone. Ergo, making cracks about your opponent's girlfriend and her tits = par for the course, bonus points if she can hear you say it. Hanging around the same pocket for which your opponent is aiming, being distracting in his visual field = GASP! I say, old chap, bad form
( ... )
Seeing a bit of himself in the boy, he may have read more into the boy's background than what was really there and unconsciously (or maybe not) thrown the game. Maybe Dean didn't care if the kid won because they were so much alike.

Dean can't be the only hustler out there :)
