Rewatch of Supernatural 2022
Season 5Season 5 was the first season I watched live, and it’s been a really long time since I’ve watched it. Rewatching it, particularly knowing what comes in later seasons, I have to say it was a very emotionally gripping season. There were only 2 episodes that I felt were duds

I found the opening of SFTD messy and confusing. I guess it was supposed to be, given the circumstances. I get that the plane crashing was a metaphor, and I suppose I guessed that God had zapped them out of the church but I was still distracted through the car scene because I couldn't stop thinking "but what happened to the plane? Did it crash? How did they get out of that?" Oh, well.
Pellegrino and the Nick story line were so good at the beginning. Too bad later seasons drained all the drama and pathos out of it. I hated that later seasons ret-conned the family tragedy as having been pre-prepared by demons. To me, it seemed more creepy and more in character somehow, that Lucifer would just opportunistically manipulate a random victim of violence. Either way, I wish they'd just left it open exactly how and what happened to Nick's family. Joining every dot doesn't necessarily make the picture better.
> Becky when she sees Dean: ‘You’re…not what I pictured’
On the other hand, I can't help being curious to know in what way Dean didn't match Becky's imagination. And was it just a throwaway funny line, I wonder, or was Kripke having a little poke? Was he implying that he thought many fans misunderstood Dean? Or, on the other hand, was it foreshadowing that Dean has fundamentally changed in a way that makes him unrecognizable to Becky as the character she's familiar with?
> The angels lost the Michael sword on earth . . .
Wasn't the point that the angels couldn't find Dean (because of Ruby's hex bags or whatever) and that was the sense in which they had "lost the Michael sword"?
> Sam tells Bobby he freed Lucifer and Bobby tells Sam to lose his number--ouch
First time I watched the episode I remember thinking it was weird that Dean didn't say anything to Bobby about that. It was heart-breaking when I realized he'd seen nothing off about Bobby's behaviour because he agreed with it. Things are bad when Dean's agreeing with someone who's possessed by a demon.
Sam looks so young when demon!Bobby's dressing him down. *wibble*
> I think this is very significant-something about caring about Dean enables people to break through demon possession
I think it's the caring part that's significant. It's the equivalent of the scene in Order of the Phoenix where Harry breaks Voldermort's possession when he sees all his friends. Evil wins while it keeps its victims vengeful, hateful and rageful. The secret weapon is love. Evil is helpless in the face of it. Turns out, that's the message of the whole season, and its introduced in the first episode.
> The visual after Dean says this emphasizes how apart they are
Yes. Again so heartbreaking. We're so used to episodes ending with them getting into the car together. *wibble*
TBC.

Gotta say, that never even occurred to me, I was more flabbergasted by them being on the plane. I just assumed it landed and they stole a car. I do wonder how Kripke decided to get them out of Lucifer's grip--did he think, 'wow, I've written them into a hole and how do I get them out of it? Aw, it's all supernatural anyway, let's just magic them someplace else!'

OMG did they keep Lucifer/Nick around waaaay too long!!!
...in what way Dean didn't match Becky's imagination. And was it just a throwaway funny line, I wonder, or was Kripke having a little poke?
I always read that as supposed to be a 'humorous' poke at all the fans who rave about Jensen's looks--not that it was very funny in that context...
Wasn't the point that the angels couldn't find Dean...
But they angels knew about Dean and heck, Uriel and Zachariah were in his presence repeatedly so I still don't get it...
...I remember thinking it was weird that Dean didn't say anything to Bobby about that.
I was so busy being upset on Sam's behalf with Bobby that Dean's non-response didn't register.
I think it's the caring part that's significant.
As opposed to caring about Dean specifically? I like to think it's caring about Dean specifically--because I am sure there have been lots of demon-possessed people who really cared about someone but couldn't break through the demon's hold. I think of it as Dean's superpower--caring about him enables others to break a demon's hold when nothing else would do it.
