'...now i'm held hostage in my head, with every word you said...'

I saw Inception for my b’day weekend before last and was instantly won over. I’m also dying to see it again because it was so intricately plotted and overwhelming and I was trying to figure out a lot of the story along the way so I missed a bit in the process, but one thing I really really want to know.

I LOVED the ending of Inception, mostly because it left itself up to interpretation. Was it all a dream? Was it not? It is kind of left up to the reader.

My favorite interpretation is that the entire movie was a dream, that pretty much everything was a very elaborate dream of Cobb's. Especially with the very dreamlike sequences in Africa (he is getting chased through a maze! There is a crack through the wall that he cannot get through! It was very chase-dream-ish to me, tbh. I actually thought that the sequence was going to end up being another dream. Also the fact that Saitou showed up before the top could topple in that sequence.) Also because I think that we only see the top fall once in the entire movie (when they are in Japan, if I remember correctly.) That combined with Ariadne's anvil of a name makes it interesting to think about it completely being a dream that Cobb dreamed up to deal with whatever psychological issues are going on in real life.

But that is just my favorite interpretation. It could be a dream, it's possible that it couldn't be.

I don't see Cobb not knowing the people on the plane, considering he made eye contact with all of them at least once. And Saitou went ahead and made his call, after making eye contact with Cobb. So I don't know about that bit.

But considering his children are the same, he could still be in limbo in that last part, instead of waking up on the plane at all. Still I think it's up to you how you interpret the ending and I kinda love that.

I suppose it’s good in a way- I mean, would I have preferred to be told definitely that it was all real? Yes, sure. But it’d’ve wrecked the movie for me if it had gone the other way and we got confirmation that it was all a dream. So I guess this is the best of both worlds! It lets people decide what suits them better, so those who prefer a happy ending can see it that way, or those who are content to examine different layers of reality and psychology and all can put a different spin on it and their theory is just as valid. YMMV!

My problem is that I’m a die-hard shipper so I can’t see it that way. I mean, I get where you’re coming from, especially the psychological angle, and it is a fascinating train of speculation, but to invalidate my ship…I can’t do it! I do see what you mean about it all being very dream-sequence-ish, though.

Ack, I should never have googled it! I hadn’t placed her name, I didn’t realize the mythological relevance, something about her namesake leading someone out of a maze? The anvils, they are falling all around me!

Another interpretation was that rather than her being a dream, she was someone the grandfather hired to save Cobb- because she was really interested in his thing with his wife, and with getting him back to his kids, right? So that angle was interesting, that she’d been called in specifically to help Cobb escape the dream-world and conquer his issues so he could get back to reality.

Only I really enjoyed the whole inception aspect of them trying to topple that guy’s company and I’d be sad if it was all just elaborate set-dressing to help him believe he’s leaving behind the dream and rejoining reality. But at least Ariadne would still be real, lol.

I don't see Cobb not knowing the people on the plane, considering he made eye contact with all of them at least once. And Saitou went ahead and made his call, after making eye contact with Cobb.

YES YES YES. This is my interpretation- who does that in real life? Who looks around and makes eye contact with a whole bunch of strangers? Most people grab their stuff and bail, right, instead of eyeballing everyone, y/y? And oh, I also pointed out that Saitou made that phone after the significant gaze exchanged with Cobb! I mean, sure, maybe he’s just some random business-man who remembered some deal he had to negotiate and it couldn’t wait, but…it’s more satisfying to believe it was him fulfilling his part of the deal, for me.
