SSHG Fic Recs
I know y’all are going to think I’m so lame for this, but it’s my SSHG anniversary today!
A year ago, on this date, I fell completely for this bizarre and wonderful ship.
When I read the series, I was more into Harry/Hermione. That was until the crapfest that was the last two books, when I lost interest in most of the characters and was bitterly disillusioned about the way JKR chose to ‘develop’ them. I became totally annoyed and dismissed the whole thing and did my best to forget about how disappointed I was by it all.
Then the hetreccers comm linked me to this epic-length Buffy/HP crossover fic with Dawn in the Marauders’ time and I was totally hooked. I binged on all the possible Buffy crossover fics available on the Twisting the Hellmouth site, including many Buffy/HP fics. But what irritated me was that most fics featured Hermione/Ron. Who were clearly completely WRONG for each other. So I went in search of H/Hr fics. The lovely sunny_serenity directed me to a few of her faves, and I spent several days reading and trying them out. But…I’d grown out of H/Hr. When I was a kid, it seemed obvious to me, but once I got older and more and more fed up with Harry’s growing immaturity and uselessness, I didn’t see the point in wasting Hermione on him. :P
I decided to look for some HP crossover fics, in case the additional fandom provided a new dynamic that would make H/Hr more palatable for me once more. Then I came across this HP/Abhorsen crossover fic, which beguiled me as I adore Garth Nix’s Abhorsen books- Sabriel, Lirael! Especially Lirael!- and so I had to take a look at Juno_Magic’s The Apprentice and the Necromancer.
I was taken aback by the fact that it was written for Snape/Hermione- SERIOUSLY? Snape? With HERMIONE? WTF kind of crack!pairing is this? So I checked it out, still completely skeptical, and fell hopelessly in love. I never thought that pairing could work, but it made sense here! Hermione, campaigning against injustice, trying to save Snape from being unfairly mistreated and imprisoned in Azkaban. Trying to outwit the corrupt system in order to ensure his safety and look after his wellbeing and then, somewhere along the way, as they grow to know each other outside the roles of teacher and student that defined them for so long…coming to care for each other. It was utterly delicious and absorbing and I couldn’t stop flailing over it.
Once it was over- sob!- I had to get a fix for my newfound addiction for Snape/Hermione and I frantically searched for more fics. Unfortunately, not EVERY story in fandom could be as brilliant and amazing as hers, but in between the disappointing and banal and poorly written fics, I found quite a lot of other gems.

These are the fics that I absolutely adored reading but are still WiP. They either have some likelihood of being completed [either they were updated in the last few months or the author has indicated it’s not abandoned] or they have reached a satisfactory point so that I’m not too disappointed at where it’s left off.
By which I mean I wibbled and flailed and tore at my hair when I discovered there was no more, lol, but the relationship between Snape and Hermione had been resolved in some manner- they understood that they both cared for each other, matters were somewhat settled between them. The plot could go hang, for all I cared, as long as there was some romantic resolution!

A year ago, on this date, I fell completely for this bizarre and wonderful ship.
When I read the series, I was more into Harry/Hermione. That was until the crapfest that was the last two books, when I lost interest in most of the characters and was bitterly disillusioned about the way JKR chose to ‘develop’ them. I became totally annoyed and dismissed the whole thing and did my best to forget about how disappointed I was by it all.
Then the hetreccers comm linked me to this epic-length Buffy/HP crossover fic with Dawn in the Marauders’ time and I was totally hooked. I binged on all the possible Buffy crossover fics available on the Twisting the Hellmouth site, including many Buffy/HP fics. But what irritated me was that most fics featured Hermione/Ron. Who were clearly completely WRONG for each other. So I went in search of H/Hr fics. The lovely sunny_serenity directed me to a few of her faves, and I spent several days reading and trying them out. But…I’d grown out of H/Hr. When I was a kid, it seemed obvious to me, but once I got older and more and more fed up with Harry’s growing immaturity and uselessness, I didn’t see the point in wasting Hermione on him. :P
I decided to look for some HP crossover fics, in case the additional fandom provided a new dynamic that would make H/Hr more palatable for me once more. Then I came across this HP/Abhorsen crossover fic, which beguiled me as I adore Garth Nix’s Abhorsen books- Sabriel, Lirael! Especially Lirael!- and so I had to take a look at Juno_Magic’s The Apprentice and the Necromancer.
I was taken aback by the fact that it was written for Snape/Hermione- SERIOUSLY? Snape? With HERMIONE? WTF kind of crack!pairing is this? So I checked it out, still completely skeptical, and fell hopelessly in love. I never thought that pairing could work, but it made sense here! Hermione, campaigning against injustice, trying to save Snape from being unfairly mistreated and imprisoned in Azkaban. Trying to outwit the corrupt system in order to ensure his safety and look after his wellbeing and then, somewhere along the way, as they grow to know each other outside the roles of teacher and student that defined them for so long…coming to care for each other. It was utterly delicious and absorbing and I couldn’t stop flailing over it.
Once it was over- sob!- I had to get a fix for my newfound addiction for Snape/Hermione and I frantically searched for more fics. Unfortunately, not EVERY story in fandom could be as brilliant and amazing as hers, but in between the disappointing and banal and poorly written fics, I found quite a lot of other gems.
