I was under the impression that they didn't take away Rumplestiltskin's magic, they just immobilized him so that they could get him to the prison where supposedly it would stop his magic. And they could do this because of his weakness for making deals
I’m now thinking that Rumpelstiltskin deliberately chose to sign, even knowing their plan was to trap him. Because he was making comments about how she wouldn’t be thinking of tricking him, would she? There would be consequences if she tried to break their deal or imprison him, etc. etc. It was a bit too knowing for me to believe he was actually tricked.
Since we know he can see the future, I think he wanted to play along with their plans because it suited him just fine- if he was in prison, he could give the Evil Queen info on how to enact the curse and Snow White the advice on how to break the curse. It seems to me like he enjoys pitting people against each other and sitting back to take in the chaos, he’s not on anyone’s side, he just wants to amuse himself. So I could see him signing the contract knowing how it would all turn out- the side-benefit being his glee in seeing her anguish when trying to double-cross him backfired and cost her the prince.
she thought was was being frozen in time, forgetting who they are, etc. etc. with her ruling was much better than what she had in the fairytale world
Yeah, I suppose…it just seems to me that the better revenge would be to teleport herself into the castle and kill Prince Charming and their baby. If the goal is to make Snow suffer, wouldn’t that be the most expedient way of doing it? It’d hurt her more than Mary Margaret who doesn’t even know David and can’t feel any real anguish over his plight. I originally thought Mary and David were a couple and that was very clever on the queen’s part, getting Mary’s soul-mate in a coma and she can only visit his body but never interact with him. That’d be absolutely horrible. But even that wasn’t to be.
you're supposed to root for Ashely because she was forced to make the deal to give up her baby and then despite not wanting to go through with it Mr. Gold wouldn't break the deal.
I don’t see that she was forced into it. Nobody put a gun to her head- she didn’t seem that keen on having the baby, at least, she was more focused on ‘people think I can’t have this child’ so she decided to go along with the majority consensus and give it up. I don’t see it as her wanting that child all along, more that she was easily swayed by other people’s opinions and didn’t think she was up to the task and so was willing to give up her child ‘coz she couldn’t take care of it.
And we never saw her go to Mr Gold to try and break the deal. Her first plan after Emma lit that fire in her belly was to break into the store. When he turned up, did she ask him to break the deal? No, she assaulted him. I’d be more sympathetic if we saw her talk to him or talk to the Sherriff or try something other than resorting to crime as a first response.
what Emma said was true -- I don't think there's a court of law that would honor that deal if the mother truly wanted the baby… I don't think Emma was stupid for making the deal with Mr. Gold. It's definitely going to bite her in the ass but she didn't have any other choice (and presumably he can't use magic against her in our world so the only thing the deal is based on is her word)
ITA with all this. I thought Emma was so cool in that scene! Nobody else is willing to go toe-to-toe with Mr Gold, even Regina is subordinate to him, and I loved that she was so fierce and uncompromising over a complete stranger.
And I don’t get the near-universal agreement that she was a moron for making that deal!
A) He can’t use magic against her in our world B) She had no problem making him back down and refusing to let him enforce a dodgy deal with Ashley, so if he tries to get her to do something immoral or something she doesn’t want, I’m totally sure she can take him on for herself! It’s not like he can MAKE her do anything! C) I know people didn’t like her dealing when she’d pointed out that deal was pretty suss and wouldn’t hold up in court- but she was thinking of Ashley’s well-being.
Oooh very good point and something I didn't consider but I definitely think that's probably right that Rumpelstiltskin decided to sign knowing what was coming in the future.
And yeah, I was actually pretty "meh" about Ashley (though I do love the fairytale version of events, even if I rolled my eyes at her pretty hard when she signed the contract without reading it -- though at least there ended up being consequences when she lost her prince and such) but I can see how it seems like Thomas' dad forced her/made her feel like giving the kid up for adoption was her only choice. That's a lot of pressure for someone that young who doesn't seem to have any support; however, I totally agree that the way they showed her handling it was bad and I too would have preferred to see her go to the sheriff or find a lawyer-type to talk over her options with instead.
I don't get why people think Emma is stupid for making the deal either. What else was she supposed to do? She's proven herself to be someone who takes quick and decisive action so... I can't see her doing anything else.
