I pretty much love everything about this show- with only one glaring exception. I CANNOT STAND THAT LITTLE KID. I feel bad for the Evil Queen, having to deal with him. Although it makes me wonder- why would you invoke a curse that you yourself fall victim to, and if she is self-aware, why would she adopt a child

And I think the evil queen tries so hard with the kid because of what they told her about the spell like she'll always be searching for something to fill the void with because she's empty and so she's trying to convince herself she loves the kid or whatever and then with Emma she just gets competitive and becomes a game she has to win. Do we know for sure that she knows that she sent them all there and who she really is? I feel like they have been playing around with a does/doesn't she know -- especially in that last scene with Rumplestiltskin.

I half-agree and half-don't!
I think the fact that she named her son after the father she KILLED (!) says a lot. She got rid of the one person that loved her, and now she's searching for something to replace that, as you said, to fill that void.
But I don't think she's 'trying to convince herself', tbh, I think she really does care about Henry (she looks upset in like, three different scenes and I think it's genuine, but YMMV), but she can't connect with him now that he's older, lol. I have a feeling that if we saw her with him as an infant, she'd be looking after him and everything, but now he's older and got his own opinions and attitudes and hating on her, it's difficult. 'coz he thinks she's evil, so...
I just watched this vid with Lana Parrill and Robert Carlyle, and the last few ( ... )

I...am torn between really really wanting that and really not. Because I didn't like the idea that the queen hated Snow White over a man (yet that's the suggestion, isn't it? Didn't Maleficient say something about her being about to marry someone? So I got the impression that Snow ruined that somehow. It's logical, but I hate the idea that she'd destroy their world over a failed relationship).
So for her to have lost a child would make so much more sense, I can totally imagine a grieving mother finding life unbearable and that's why she'd hate Snow so much, she's pregnant and living HEA with the love of her life, everything the queen lost.
Just...it's such a painful backstory. *huggles the queen*
Are you reading spoilers for the show? 'coz I saw something about ep 11 that I'm not sure may or may not play into this.

From here:
TVLine has learned exclusively that the Emmy-winning West Wing alum will guest star on ABC’s fantastical freshman series as the Enchanted Forest’s King Leopold, who also happens to be Snow White’s father.
While I shan’t reveal much more here, fairy tale enthusiasts can probably predict who this king will be wed to when we meet him in Episode 11. But what you very well might not know is what character’s somewhat tragic (yet thoroughly romantic) backstory he will figure into.
I can't work out- is the Evil Queen Snow's wicked stepmother here? IDK if they said that or not. So maybe she's the one he'll be wed to. (you'd think it would be obvious, only I keep trying to remember what Maleficient said which suggested she SHOULD'VE married some dude if not for Snow, so maybe that didn't happen)
Otherwise, she might be the one whose tragic backstory he figures into.
