My job makes me homicidal. Since the company was bought out I have not had a single 18hr period where they have not tried to contact me, drag me back to the office, or get something from me. I hear you W, I nearly starved before I got into the oil business as a green "worm" (pale body)
I hate sucking jobs as well. Have had several for long term too... People complain aboot incompetant government, but they forget incompetant business, and they may impact us more.
Don't give up on the job business, and keep looking. You know- they come thru when it's time, not when we would like.
My best luck has always been with the jellow pages. Find a business category you're interested in, and cold call 20 or 30 of them; try for small buzs with no HR dept, or a friendly one. I know cold calling in no fun, just take it for the process, not worry abt the results. Try to strike up a little conversation.

Half dozen will talk with you and two or three will be interested enough to invite you in the see the works, or you can ask if you can come by and be shown around. Now you have contacts, and not co's with an ad and a 2-inch stack of resumes on the desk- you're not part of a crowd at this point. Just ask if they may need somebody at some point in the future if they'll keep you in mind; and check back a few times- not too often, but once thanks for the site visit, and a few months later, and some months after that. I snagged two of my long term jobs during eight years of night school with this method, one a co I had contacted five or six years previously, after the first one dried up.
Got my Shell Oil job in '82 cause I drove through Ventura and went to the library to use the yellow pages there...
