beauty of sorts

While walking home from the bus stop, Willy, Caroline, and I were amazed to see that nearly thousands of monarch butterflies were flying in the midst of the neighboring eucalyptus trees. In past years, I remember that the butterflies would reside in the forest, but they seemed to have decreased by number in the last few years. Well it seems that they have decided to come back with immensity. We stood there, astounded, and watched as the butterflies danced above our heads. Hundreds of butterflies nested together in many visible clusters. It was amazing. I went home and grabbed my camera, and returned to the forest alone. I attempted to capture the vitality of these beautiful flying insects, but failed to capture their essence. I want you to see them flying. I want you to see those thousands and thousands of wings.

The lighting in the forest grew soft, and the sun’s yellow glow turned to a flaming ginger. It was getting late. As I videoed the butterflies flying, a brown blur flew past my eyes. I jumped and looked around. I went back to my initial position and was astonished by what I saw. An owl sat perched on a nearby fence, staring me in the eyes. It was about 5 feet away from me. I stood staring at it, unable to breathe. For several minutes I stood there, completely enchanted and mystified
by this fearless bird. It was so incredibly beautiful. I suddenly remembered that I had my camera around my neck, and I managed to take a picture of it right before it flew away.

Talk about a magical afternoon. I’m beginning to love the area I live in.
