~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Hyukjae came back two days later only wearing his pants, and a scowl on his face.
Hangeng, who knew him better than anyone, decided that it was better for the rest of the pack to stay in the house while he discussed things with the younger wolf.
He couldn't even say hi, before Hyukjae fainted on his arms; of course the stupid idiot had to exhaust himself.
Of course.
~*~*~*~
Donghae had trouble staying in the main house.
He was jumpy and nervous all the time. The plethora of stronger smells were scaring him and every time someone talked to him, he would whimper and try to stay as far away from the other as possible.
It was his inner wolf, Hangeng told him. He was scared because he couldn't show himself yet, and felt at disadvantage, that was the reason they didn't want him in the house yet, he wasn't born as a werewolf. He still couldn't control his instincts, and panic could be dangerous on those cases.
Apparently whatever made Hyukjae run away was even more dangerous for him than pure uncontrolled panic.
At first they assigned him a room, but he couldn't even sit down without starting to tremble.
Twenty minutes in the house (and after getting over the shock of Hyukjae's sudden departure) and not even Ryeowook could fake patience towards Donghae.
Hangeng showed him his room.
Three hours later he showed Donghae Hyukjae's room.
It was like a spell.
Something in the room made him feel at peace; the fear was still there, but he could look at Hangeng in the eye without feeling paranoia building in him.
“I knew it...” he heard Hangeng say, and just when he was about to ask, he got interrupted “stay in here and don't come out.” Then he left.
Hangeng was such a difficult guy.
~*~*~*~
If Donghae didn't know better he would have said that Hyukjae was hibernating.
Hangeng brought him the morning of the second day, told Donghae he fainted, and he would probably wake up at the end of the day.
“He's stupid, doesn't know when to stop pushing himself” said the beta after leaving Hyukjae on the bed of his room. “Stay in here, Donghae, keep him company. He'll get angry when he sees your face.”
Donghae raised an eyebrow.
“If he's going to get angry, why don't you stay?”
Hangeng gave him a slightly insane smile.
“Because he will get angry when he sees you,” he repeated as if that was the perfect explanation.
After Hangeng left (without explaining anything, as usual) Donghae turned to look a the sleeping figure of Hyukjae.
With only a pair of pants, the cold morning made him shiver in his sleep. Donghae decided to cover the poor guy with a shirt, trying to not focus too much on every bit of skin he got to touch while dressing him. Hyukjae didn't even flinch.
'He's so pale right now'
Donghae couldn't imagine what happened to the other, he looked so full of life and strong just two days ago, now he just looked dead. And Donghae felt suddenly tired.
When Ryeowook entered the room to give Donghae his lunch, he found him sleeping curled next to Hyukjae's unconscious figure.
He let them sleep.
That wonderful smell was so close to him that the only thing he wanted to do was to bring it even closer, maybe rub himself with it, make that smell part of him, his property.
Why wasn't it already his?
Some part of him remembered that smell from a few days ago. He was containing himself, but he couldn't recollect why would anyone try to stop the utter happiness that the smell made him feel.
“Hyukjae, wake up.”
He growled something close to a shut up while nuzzling closer to the source of his current bliss.
“Hyukjae, please.”
He couldn't remember being more annoyed in his life.
“I can't breathe.”
When Hyukjae opened his eyes, he found that he had somehow managed to tangle his legs with Donghae's and bring the other so close to his body that his face was trapped between Hyukjae's chest and his arm.
That fucking wolf.
“Why are you here?” growled Hyukjae after disentangling himself from Donghae's body opting to ignore the loss and coldness he felt after doing so. He was glad that his weakness and sheer lack of energy impeded him to get aroused in the previous obscene cuddling session he just initiated.
“Hangeng-hyung told me to keep you company after he brought you.”
Hyukjae sighed and grimaced.
“Did Hangeng-hyung also tell you to stay in my room while I was gone?”
“Yes, but how did you...?”
“It reeks of you.”
“Oh, I'm sorry.”
Hyukjae just shrugged and closed his eyes again, while facing the ceiling.
“I guess you want me to leave, then?” Donghae started to move to get up of the bed. Hyukjae moved to grab Donghae's arm. “Hyukjae?”
“Stay.” he said simply, then took his cellphone, that lay forgotten next to him on the night table and dialed quickly.
“Hyung, Donghae and I are very hungry and would appreciate some food, you should come here with it so I can tell you in person how much I hate you,” and then hung up. He noticed Donghae looking at him.
I want to ask you something,” Donghae asked quietly “before the others get in here...”
Hyukjae kept quiet, “I was really scared when I was in here. I felt like everyone wanted to hurt me.” he then raised his head to look straight at Hyukjae's eyes “until I came in here, and suddenly I was feeling better. Why?”
Hyukjae growled.
He hated explaining things, he was horrible at that kind of stuff, not that he didn't like to talk, but this was a sensible subject and he hated sensible subjects.
“Because I'm the best guy in this house and your nose noticed first than the rest of you, of course.”
“You're a horrible liar.”
“You're annoying a guy who's weak and exhausted, how dare you doubt me.”
They spent the six minutes that took Hangeng to get to the room, bickering about whatever they wanted. Donghae, Hyukjae noticed, had a terrible attention span.
Donghae had to wonder how did Hyukjae manage to look fearless in front of Hangeng and Jungsoo. He had that challenging stare all the time, and was able to object to whatever they had to say. He stood in front of a pair that intimidated Donghae more than his mother the day she found him drinking with his school friends.
“Aren't you going to tell us?” he heard Jungsoo say with an annoyed tone and his arms crossed. Hyukjae just kept eating.
“You know, that Ryeowook guy really knows how to cook. I need to congratulate him, maybe hire him too.”
Donghae couldn't help but snort, Hangeng rolled his eyes and Jungsoo frowned.
It was clear no one was going to get anything useful until Hyukjae stopped inhaling the spaghetti Ryeowook made.
Five minutes later, the room was in silence. Hangeng decided to sit on Hyukjae's bed and play with his cellphone. Jungsoo was staring out the window and Donghae was sticking close to Hyukjae while the latter finished his meal (and whatever Donghae left, because he was apparently really hungry).
“So two days ago...”
Three sets of eyes focused on Hyukjae.
“Two days ago you left us Donghae by the door and ran away like a madman, madwolf... whatever.” resumed Hangeng quickly. Hyukjae ignored him.
“Hyung, do you remember that time when you found out that we were unknowingly helping a vengeful mermaid to destroy a guy's life only because he didn't wait for her? And we found out and decided to stop working for her and then she...”
“Started to seduce and eat every human slightly similar to the other guy until I had to... yeah I remember.”
Both of them shuddered.
“Apparently by rescuing Donghae here, you guys did something kind of similar, because the corpse I saw last night, looked like you,” he looked at Donghae who gulped nervously, “and was certainly not turned before he was killed.”
He couldn't help feeling the weight on his stomach and his throat getting suddenly dry.
Did someone, really die in his place?
“You think this will keep up?” asked an angry looking alpha.
“I don't know,” said Hyukjae frowning a little, “This is really strange, that thing wanted someone to sense the murder, it was a message.”
All of them kept quiet thinking exactly the same.
He still wants Donghae.
