I was traversing that dark stretch between Matthews house and my own tonight near the hour of twelve. The weather, thoroughly displaying it's fickle disposition, had sauntered into the lower realm, contrasting strongly with my clothing. The wind blew cold and dug it's nails into the flesh of my back so that I shivered. I neared the bridge, far from any lighted home. There was little noise save the distant rush of cars. The wind grew stronger and I fancied that I heard a tinkling, such as a dogs metal collar would make. I peered about, but nothing moved save for a sole leaf which hastened across the cement in small hops. Presently I continued, the bridge was now right before me. Again I heard a slight tinkling, I peered deep into that shadow shrouded plain, yet nothing moved. The sound came again from behind, this time a faint rasping twitch of noise. I turned slowly, and to my horror some object there stood in the dark. It loomed high from amongst the grass, tall and thin. Yet I looked again and my fear was assuaged, the fell demon was only a stop sign which stood sentinel in the road. The bridge was before me, and I had no choice but to continue ahead or turn back, I began my crossing. To my left and right thick concrete rose up. Again from behind I heard a slight tinkling, the sort the collar of a dog ghosting through the brush would make. I turned once more, the sound changed once more to a skittering, a dry thing. And then I made the connection, the sound was from a small leaf which sailed across the road as a ship on the most chafing of seas. Relieved, I continued my walk.
Many times when crossing that bridge I've worried about what would happen if a pack of wild dogs attacked me. I think the best solution is to dangle from the side of the bridge on one side of the thick concrete railing. This would be relatively safe, but I would not be able to hold it for very long. I think if I were to stand atop the railing I may be somewhat safe, for the dogs would be able to do little more than bite at my feet, I'm not sure though. Some dogs can jump. It might be better to just run.
