hockey

i have my first hockey game tonight with nuclear winter. i haven't played a formal, officiated hockey game since my second year of university (is that 1999 or 2000?). minor exception being a few games with my dad's oldtimer team in edson over christmas breaks, but those don't really count.

i was forced to purchase a new stick today, and also chose to purchase new shoulder pads. considering i'm no longer playing contact hockey and that a 'scrappy goon' role isn't required, i felt the need to shed my linebacker-esque shoulder pads (which allowed me to engage in all sorts of ridiculous collisions and which, it should be added, weigh a good 15 pounds when wet with sweat) in favour of a set which could best be described as spartan. i look forward to my increased mobility with said new equipment.

i must admit my love for the game of hockey. my attempts to reject this love during my early twenties - "it's a meaningless, competitive, masculine game" - have since disappeared. gone are my attempts to over-analyze the game. it was all a bunch of wanking, anyway. hooray for an unquestioned acceptance of a game that dominated my childhood!
