my legs feel like jelly after spending the last two days patrolling two of the larger fires in the district. they're both essentially out, but at 3400 hectares and 1800 hectares, there's a lot of ground to cover. yesterday we found six tiny hotspots (on little islands of green in the middle of the burn) in many hours of patrolling. today we found 3 hotspots and managed to walk almost exclusively in muskeg. the boreal equivalent of an enormous sponge, every step in muskeg sees your foot sinking at least a foot into ultra soft moss and stinky, stinky water. it drains your legs of energy. i'm not complaining, though. the alternative to hotspotting is project status. i'll take the work on fires and the overtime, too. we'll be on these fires for at least two more days before they'll give them the big EX.
