Oh I'm not really surprised it's a hit. It's riding that wave of fairytale resurgence and it's got a very physically attractive cast and it waves a few carrots in front of its audience. And personally I keep watching out of the 'this could be done SO MUCH BETTER ... maybe THIS episode will be good?' trap. :(( (Also because there is very little in the way of alternative strong programming at the moment.)

But yeah, it was always going to be hard to work with fairy tales in terms of the inherent misogyny ... unless they went for some classic feminist revisions. I was therefore mildly pleased with Red's backstory (though I wish to god they wouldn't cast her as 'town slut' in Storybrooke).

they really are. I watched the panel from whatever-it-was-con and the chick that plays MM was rambling on about how amaaaaazing the writing was and how when she found out what unlocks the spell she was just BLOWN AWAY as it was so inevitable and perfect or something ... it was sickening! The writers were just sitting back with very large puffed egos soaking it up. Seriously, not good! I think the show would be better if it had a rockier start and had to listen to (a more demanding) audience a bit more and actually had to start putting some serious content into the show...

Also seriously DITCH Charming. WHY and HOW are we ever supposed to ship these two? He's a dim-witted asshole and has shown it many times ...

I watched this wrethed thing for Carlyle (who is usually awesome), and while Gold/Rumpy has his failings (ugh, the writing!) Carlyle kept me watching, until one week it was just too much all of it. FYI, the chick who plays MM has a well know pill-popping problem, maybe that explains the effusive praise for the shitty writing?
