Father's Day 2007

In honour of Father's Day, I present a photo essay of my dad and his father...

Thomas Louis Wickenden was one of the most highly honoured and decorated cadets ever. This is him at age 14. My grandpa was an exceptional marksman all his life.

Grandpa continued the fine tradition of Wickendens serving in the Royal Marines Light Infantry (we've been there since it began). He served on the H.M.S. Lowestoft starting in 1917. After being discharged from military service, grandpa served as a policeman for many, many years. He passed away in 1974, and I miss him terribly.

Derek Thomas Wickenden, my daddy. See those toes? I got 'em. Got the ears, too. Cute little nipper at 4 years of age, eh?

Dad was stationed in Wales for part of his time in the Royal Marines Light Infantry. This pic is from 1951. He was also a tech on an RASC anti-aircraft transport, and was a member of the Royal Military Police's Special Investigations Branch. Yup, me old man was a secret policeman!

After leaving the military, dad graduated from the Metropolitan Police Traning School, Peel House, Hendon, in 1952.

Contrary to popular belief, at one point my father actually liked soccer - he even played on the police soccer team. He's the one at the bottom left - yeah, the guy with the ears. Now, he loves hockey - doesn't play, just watches it.

My so dapper daddy, at age 60. Now, at age 76, he still looks about the same - well, he did eventually lose the comb-over.

I know he won't read this, but happy Father's Day dad!

family, thankfulness
