Iron Chef Canada: Battle Shoe

Nov 07, 2005 21:02

I hate my feet. Shoe store clerks hate my feet.

My feet are the most contrary things this side of a drooling dromedary.

My feet say to themselves, "Hey, the wider we become the more annoying we become... OK tendons! Ligaments! Hey-ho, let's go, let's make room for another toe!" It's true - I hear them whispering late at night.

I've had a doctor, real genuine MD, say to me, and I quote, "You might as well face it - you were born with bad feet." Unfortunately, this statement was followed up by her saying that I'll have to learn to live with crippling nerve pain in my toes. Didn't think much of that idea, so I made myself an appointment with a chiropractor. (Been pain-free for close to ten years now, thank you very much.) Even my chiropractor said my feet were difficult and a little ornery at times.

Gentle reader, you may ask why the discussion of footies. Well, I need new shoes. So, I've been preparing myself to do battle. My will vs. my left foot vs. my right foot vs. the shoe world... yes, tag-team Iron Chefs taking on shoe leather.

Have you ever searched for shoes online? It's a frustrating experience, to say the least. I've found many websites that offer great-looking super-wide shoes - but they're on-line sales only, and I really need to try 'em on first. Grumble, but at least I know what I want *does* exist.

Google provided 4 good possibilities immediately - Shoe Avenue, New Balance, and BioPed in the GTA, and Miller Shoes in Hamilton. Then I saw something that had honestly never occurred to me - a listing for a store that specializes in items for cross-dressers. Where better to find shoes to fit a woman with big feet than somewhere that caters to men wanting to wear women's shoes?

So, my Google hunt went in some very strange directions after that revelation. Unfortunately, most of the tranny/crossdressing shoes tend to be stiletto heels at least 4" high. Tempting to try on a pair for the hell of it. Perhaps we'll visit Take A Walk On The Wildside when in Toronto before the Bauhaus concert. As I continue to pore through the various goth/fetish websites, looking for sole-mates, I wonder if I could create a couple of corsets for these feet of mine. Perhaps I'll just learn how to make my own shoes instead. How hard could it be?

I shall find at least one pair of shoes on that day out... I love the smell of naugahyde in the morning! eniastoa is a brave, brave man.
