And now on to the more thoughtful portion of this post. As I'm pretty sure all of you know, I'm taking a course called "Dreams and Dreaming" this semester, which I've been very much looking forward to. I've only had one lecture so far, but it was really interesting. Plus I've been reading the textbook, which is also really fascinating. A lot of what I've read so far talks about how ancient cultures thought about dreams, and how they used them for their daily lives. Like dreams were sent by gods/angels/demons, and were prophetic with regards to personal problems, as well as for whole groups of people. The Greeks actually went to specific temples when they were sick (or someone went for them) and prayed to be visited by the god of healing in their dreams, and they'd actually get detailed perscriptions/other medical procedures.
So I was thinking about it, and even in our world of science and truth and all that crap, it strikes me as quite something that we still don't know what causes dreams. There are a lot of theories on it, of course, but no one really knows. Especially since there is a lot of evidence for the existence of prophetic dreams. Not necessarily big things, but still. If dreams were just the result of random neuronal firing during sleep, then how does the whole prediction thing work?
Enter random question to you folks (okay two questions). Numero uno, where do you think dreams come from? And zwei, have you ever had a prophetic dream?
