The Uber-Update

Sep 05, 2006 17:47

Since I haven't had internet access in a while, this update has been put together over the period of the past weekend. A fairly eventful weekend. So prepare yourselves for a long one:

Sunday
Hullo peoples! Okay, so since I have no internet access (at home, anyway) until next Saturday at the earliest, I'll be writing this lj post in installments. I originally intended to hold off until Tuesday when I'll hopefully be able to use the RAP computer lab (my program's name is so very cool), but so much has happened already I really can't wait. So. Here we are.

Have to say, in everything I pictured for this year, I was way off. Let's start with the (possibly) most interesting thing so far. In the house I'm living in, the 6 bedroom house in which I am living, there is: Aaron, Matt, Kenny, Dave, Matt, and me. What's that, you say? Five male names? My goodness, you're right! For the first time in my life, I'm the girliest person in the house :P Now I know there's a bunch of jokes out there (and I'll admit a few of my more interesting story ideas went through my head when I found out), so feel free to go nuts over this one. Let me just give more fuel to the fire. Three of them are friends who've known each other for years and are actually from Barrie, so they're probably guaranteed to be having parties over here all the time. Because they're all first year undergrads (actually that's a lie, I think one's a second year). So not only am I the only girl, I'm also the oldest. And, although it doesn't necessarily follow, the most mature. I just spent a very informative 20-30 minutes listening to them talk about a variety of things, including their sexual conquests of the past few evenings. I think I'm going to have to start carrying a notebook around. If I ever do decide to go for my masters/PhD in psychology, this would be a great case study. I'm doing my best to joke around and stuff with them, but I'm undecided whether I'm actually being funny or just the weird outcast. Right now they're smoking up, so I decided to come down and hide in my room. Not that I haven't hung out with people doing that before, but they couldn't seem to understand that I had no interest in partaking so I thought it'd be best to just get out of the realm of peer pressure.

Other news today, I actually managed to accomplish a fair amount. I walked over to campus, it's only about 10 minutes away, and then wandered around there to find where my orientation will be on Tuesday. Actually found it (yay me!). Also found the athletics centre, and got myself a membership and rented a locker. So there will be no excuse. I'm actually hoping to get a workout in tomorrow, since I'm going a little stir-crazy sitting around here. So far I've watched all four seasons of Coupling (love that show!), bits of Firefly, the special features of Pirates of the Caribbean, and am now watching the movie. Plus. I need to get into the habit. So. It's a plan.

Oh! Birthday news! On Sunday (last week, the 27th), my parents and I went to see Invinceable (pretty good) and have dinner at the Outback (sooooo good). I got a hoodie from ThinkGeek that's set up with about a billion pockets and an inner wiring system so I can hide my iPod and junk, plus a zen/meditation/Buddha writing tablet thingy. It's really very cool, actually, you write on it with water and it looks like black ink for a while until the water evaporates and then it's completely blank again. Also got a fridge (it has a freezer and everything!) and a trip to the Haliburton Wolf Centre!!!! Mom and I went on Thursday. That night we did a wolf howl, which was quite possibly one of the coolest things in the history of the world ever. There was a little lecture thingy, which included pack dynamics, facial/body expressions, historical myths and such, and then we headed off for the actual howl. Our guide did a solo howl first, and then she picked a few adults for a pack voice. I was nervous about volunteering but, thanks to Mom shoving me forwards, I got to howl. There's about a 50/50 chance that the pack at the Wolfe Centre will respond, and the did! It was so cool! I mean I've heard recordings and stuff, but this was so much better. Yes, I'm gushing. I don't care. It was awesome. Then Friday we went over to the Wolf Centre and got to see the pack wandering around. There's 10 wolves there, 7 adults and 3 pups. I could have stayed there for a really long time, just watching them (it's through one-way glass so they can't see specific humans, although obviously they know people are there), but we had to leave eventually. Mom bought me a couple of the professional photographs of the wolves, since the ones we took through the glass didn't turn out so well. Right now they're waiting for frames, but I think I'll just put them up as they are. So. Best birthday present ever.

Aaaaaand . . . that's pretty much it for now. I would be so much happier if classes were starting tomorrow so I could have something to do other than sit around and worry/be bored. If I had internet access I wouldn't care nearly as much, since I could bug you people in person (or . . . in person-ish), but that won't happen until Saturday. And I can't even blame it on anyone, since it's my fault that the antenna for my wireless card got left in my dad's car. Curse me!

Alrighty. I might type more tomorrow, we'll see what happens.

Monday
So one thing I discovered this morning, I'll definitely be showering at the gym. I went down to the basement shower this morning, and discovered it's quite possibly the smallest shower I've ever seen. One thing I will give it, it at least has great water pressure. Still. Assuming the gym showers have room to turn around in, that will be better.

And the other thing I discovered, which is actually really annoying, is that our washing/drying machines cost two bucks each, in loonies. So all the quarters I've stock-piled are officially useless. Not quite sure how I'm going to fix this. Guess I'll have to pay a visit to a bank and ask really nicely. Bankers are nice people, after all. Bah.

So I spent the bulk of today half-watching movies (Chicago, Blast!, and Fierce Creatures) and reading over old things that I've written. It's always interesting to look at old stuff and have the occasional "hey, that's not bad!" moment. I also had the best intentions of working on Jamie's undead army story . . . which may yet happen sometime this evening, but . . . not as of yet. You'll get it by the time you're finished law school, Jamie, I promise :P

Tuesday
Well, survived my first day of class. Holy man do I feel out-gunned. I was so proud of my little background of research and stuff (doing a thesis, working for Elaine), but that’s pretty much nothing next to some of these people. Some people have been working actual jobs doing this stuff, and are basically just coming here to upgrade their resumes. I’m starting to kind of half-panic about whether people will want to work with me on their projects and stuff. Not entirely, because it’s not usually as bad as I think, but . . . yeah. Definite panic-potential.

The good news: I now have all my textbooks, went to the gym today, and am able to access to RAP computer lab which means I have the INTERNET!!! Chatting with Jamie as I type this. Contact with friends, joy!

Uhm, so that’s about it for now. I have some homework to do (madness), so I should probably do that. I’ll also be emailing people like crazy, so some of you have that to look forward to. In the meantime, *huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs*

school, housemates
