why i hate microsoft, part 5,380,265,104

so. i have an access database that I use at work. it saves me doing a lot of things by hand, but I don't _DO_ windows, so there are times when it drives me nuts. I'm wanting to add some functionality (woo hoo!) but not having a lot of luck. Here's the deal: I have a spreadsheet that calculates stuff for me, and I need to somehow get that number back into access (well, it's a field in access) right now, I update the spreadsheet, and then I have to update the access field myself. this occasionally leads to um. mistakes.

now... i know I can make a linked table in access that points to the excel spreadsheet... that kinda works. what I can't quite figure out is how to get the data that I need to end up in the other table. in the spreadsheet, 3 fields match what's in the other table, except that occasionally there are instances where there's more data in the spreadsheet than in the database. i need that stuff left alone, and the database to only get the data for the rows that match rows in the other table. confused yet? I KNOW there is a way to do this, somehow. I just don't do enough db stuff to know what to tell the stupid access help file what I want, so it can tell me WTF to do.

so. suggestions?
