After the reveal of the last scene of Faith, Hope and Trick, this episode naturally deals with Buffy learning about Angel’s return, while at the same time it’s a sequel of sorts to Phases - as it’s only the second episode to deal with Oz’s werewolfishness and takes place during the 3 days he needs to be locked up in a cage. Debbie is battered woman who’s „lost herself“ and protecting her abuser, and who sadly ends up killed by him.

I saw someone online (I can't remember where, sadly--it was awhile ago) argue that this episode overlooks the possibility that a woman may be putting herself in danger by leaving an abusive partner. They pointed out that Pete kills Debbie precisely because he thinks she ratted him out to Buffy.

A little detail I noticed: Debbie says, "I'm his everything" when she's defending Pete, which is exactly how Willow describes Tara in "Tough Love" ("She's my everything").

Good catch!

Debbie didn't leave Pete though, and Buffy wasn't trying to make her leave him, she was trying to stop Pete and was telling Debbie not to protect him. Debbie's fatal mistake was that she protected him, deflecting Buffy's shot and warning Pete, even though Buffy wasn't trying to kill Pete, just incapacitate him. It's because, as she said, she was afraid they would lock Pete up (prison? mental asylum?).

Debbie: Would they take him someplace?
Buffy: Probably.
Debbie: (shakes her head, sobbing) I could never do that to him. I'm his everything.

Great catches with the "you're its dog"/"love's bitch" + "most women aren't attracted to dead guys" bits. All the homages to abusive relationships wrt Buffy/Angel are wonderfully subtle and unsettling.

Angel spends the entire episode shirtless, but, amazingly, he has his pants on. It’s good to know that even in his wild state he managed to get his pants on. Did he take the pants off of some human, or did the hell dimension drop him a suitcase with clothes?
