I've got a question for you all. Which Science Fiction and Fantasy TV shows, movie franchises or movies  do you think had the best treatment of female characters (best written, most memorable, important in the plot etc.)?

I'm writing an article for an online magazine, and I want to choose 10 franchises/movies/shows that I find the best in that ( Read more... )

battlestar galactica, buffy, star trek, strong female characters, heroines, sci-fi, the x-files, xena

I'd say every movie Pedro Almodovar ever made. (But then, he doesn't do fantasy/sci-fi...)

The stuff Ursula K. Le Guin writes? (Ah, these are books, so they're out, too...)

Hm, "Planet Terror" (R.Rodriguez)?

"Barbarella"? (Don't hit me! It made an impact...)

Uhm, "Day of the dead"? (Just, because the woman - Sarah - is the only intelligent and likeable person in the film...)

"Tank Girl"? (the movie)

I'm bad at this - i don't watch TV. But your question showed (me) that there are very, very few sci-fi/fantasy shows/movies which depict a positive image of women.

I love Almodovar! And I do think that Jane Fonda is still proud of Barbarella. I'm not convinced she's wrong to be.

Dollhouse! The show has problems, but it was obviously deeply female-focused from the start.

Firefly/Serenity is worth including I think for River's arc as well as the other female characters, but I agree that it wasn't completed.

I tend to agree about Voyager. Wasn't impressed.

Olivia Dunham does indeed become AWESOME as Fringe goes on. She is kind of just -there- in S1, but she becomes really fleshed out and sympathetic, and she is tough as nails. I'd definitely recommend watching further.
