“Aw come on Howard, cheer up, it’s Christmas!”

“Exactly, sir! It’s Christmas and Fossil’s got us working,” Howard grumbled, hefting a bucket of millet onto his shoulder.

“But Christmas at the zoo is genius! I’ve made six snowmen already!”

“As if you have. It’s not even snowing.”

“And I’ve put Santa hats on the bonobos and taught Bollo to play God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen on the tuba. He’s joining the Salvation Army band next year.”

“Is he really?” Howard’s tone was sarcastic but Vince’s persistent enthusiasm was beginning to thaw his frosty mood.

“And check out the hut.”

“It looks like a glitterball threw up on it.”

“Cheers, Howard,” Vince said proudly, although it hadn’t been intended as a compliment. Howard looked up.

“What’s that? Is that mistletoe?”

“…Maybe.”

“You do know you and me are the only keepers working today, don’t you, Vince?”

“…Yeah.”

“Oh.”

All was still in the keepers’ hut as Howard leaned in and kissed Vince quickly but tenderly on the lips.

“Merry Christmas, Howard.” Vince smiled softly.

“Merry Christmas, Vince.” Howard leaned forward again but was stopped short by an indignant squawk from his younger colleague.

“You’ve got millet in me hair, you berk!”
