Vince shifted in his seat, his hair brushing Howard’s neck. Howard shivered, inhaled the scent of his strawberry conditioner and felt his heart lurch unexpectedly. It was then that Howard knew he was in real danger. He kept his eyes on the flickering screen in front of them, outwardly betraying no emotion but there was no way round the new and frightening feelings that were beginning to beat their wings within his chest. This was the most scared he’d ever been, ever. He could face running from deranged killer nanas or facing certain icy death in the Arctic with equanimity (well, screaming terror, actually, but he could remember it how he liked in his own internal monologue), but this was something else. It felt like falling, like being dropped from a great height. Howard never had been one for heights, his stomach lurched and his hands trembled. His first instinct was to run, run out the door and never look back. There was only one way to go when you were falling and that was further and further down, deeper and deeper. Head over heels. Howard sighed and stayed where he was, knowing it was already too late to run.
