The first time Dan hears Alone Again Or he's digging through his father's records, constructing the soundtrack to the awkward summer of his fourteenth year. Unfortunately, Lizzie Tyrell doesn't understand his mix tape and after that he never makes one for a girl again.
The second time is at Sugar Ape, their new receptionist dancing about as she arranges her desk. Over time Sasha stops dancing and Dan can never work up the nerve to ask why.
The third time, Dan comes home one night to find Jones and Claire smashed and giggling, singing very loudly and very off key. "We finally found a song we both like!" Jones exclaims, grinning wildly.
The fourth time is years later, late at night pressed against Jones watching a film in bed. Warm and happy, a state Dan has finally adjusted to. Afterwards, Jones slides out of Dan's arms and begins rummaging around for his boots.
"Where are you going?"
"To find a shopping trolley. I'm making that bull."
Dan looks around at all the things piled around him, books and records and bits of machinery all lit by the glow of fairy lights hanging from the ceiling. Their room.
"Wait for me."
