Vacation 1 of 2 proved to be the most fun I've had in a very long time. After gathering the much needed supplies for the trip last Thursday, Katie and I prepared for the long drive up north. We left around 5:30 in the morning. The drive was very peaceful and full of relationship building moments. I just cannot believe how much money we had to spend on gas this weekend! I can't wait until America can get out from underneath the thumb of the Saudis. But aside from the gas prices the trip was great!
We got to a city outside of Escanaba within 7 hours including an hour stop in Gaylord for a wonderful breakfast meal at Bob Evans. So after reaching the destination, we were both kind of worried about the living quarters we would be staying in since Katie's mom called the place a dump. Now Katie's family had gone camping many times in very rustic environments, so for her mom to call the place a dump was very perplexing to the both of us. However the place wasn't as bad as we thought it was. After passing all the beat up and run down cabins along side Highway 2, the place looked great. Sure it was small but it was quaint. Katie's dad side of the family had all joined us in this small resort. We all had a great time.
We took Katie's dad's boat out to an extremely shallow lake. We traveled at least 2 football fields before we got to a waters depth of at least 6 feet. It was fun. We got soaked with all the chopping waves hitting the side of the boat. However getting the boat back on the trailer was a feat in itself. The dumb ramp was lopsided so it took me and Katie's dad about 30 minutes before we got the boat onto the trailer. A fun bonding moment to say the least. Then me and Katie went to Lake Michigan for a swim. The waves were pretty high for a lake. It felt like being in the ocean. Then we went back to the cabin site for dinner and a great bonfire.
The next day was wedding preparation day. Me and Katie took a little walk and went back to the beach to walk along the water. Then we headed back to get dressed and ready for her cousin's wedding. The drive to Escanaba was nice. Its a pretty little town. The wedding itself was simple yet elegant as Katie said. It was a beautiful little ceremony. The reception itself was a blast. I found out that I can be quite the dancer after 2 beers. Me and Katie had so much fun.
The drive back home occurred the next day with a stop at Frankenmuth and Bronner's where we bought a cute ornament for our future collection. The trip home though was marred with endless traffic and construction we had to take a long alternate way home since 23 was a parking lot. But we got back safe and sound. An end to a great trip. I just pray that this weekends camping trip will be just as good.
