One good thing about having so many favourites on this season of So You Think You Can Dance is that one of them was bound to end up in the top four. My original favourites were Twitch, Mark, and Will.
I'm deeply disappointed that the top two guys aren't Mark and Twitch. I think Joshua is good at his style but overpraised in all others, though he IS good at lifting, I'll give him that. I love both Mark and Twitch, so I'm torn. Twitch could very well get all of my votes, should I decide to vote next week, but I must say Courtney grew on me over the course of the competition by virtue of her solos. More than any other girl, she knows how to bring it in that little 30-second window and she's never done something so egregiously awful as to fucking SMILE through a routine set to "This Woman's Work," KATEE. Lardy. That alone makes me not want Katee to win, but I think she or Joshua seem set to win it. I'm seriously hoping for Twitch. Before the competition even began in earnest, I was pretty sure he'd make it to the finale because he was already so well known and is so great at what he does. I don't think either Twitch or Joshua is as versatile as Mark. They threw every deadly style they could at Mark throughout the season - foxtrot, two-step, I think he may even have done a quickstep - and dumped on him when Kherington let him down two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Twitch and especially Joshua have been tossed softballs and propped up with manipulative praise and convenient fact-twisting from the judges (ahem, weren't they talking about how Joshua's classical training was showing early in the season? Now he suddenly has no classical training?). Chelsie was always best with Mark, for me, but I'll always love what she and he did in "Beautiful." In fact, that routine will always hold a special place in my heart because of what I thought of the first time I saw it (I'm keeping that a secret, sorry).
In spite of all this, though, I feel disappointed in this season as a whole. That's not the dancers' fault, though; I think the choreography paled in comparison to seasons two and three (didn't see the first season). There was almost no Wade or Shane, Mia seems to be believing her own hype too much, and Napoleon and Tabitha's routines all look too similar. I do love Sonya, though; her routine for Mark and Courtney was brilliant and they danced the fuck out of it. Mandy is hit or miss but I usually love the music she chooses, at least. Tyce is just precious and as long as he's not doing Broadway, I love his work. Not that he isn't good at Broadway, but I'm just sick of seeing it. There has been WAY too much disco. Then, of course, the judging has been erratic and manipulative as hell this year, with over-the-top praise and pimping of certain contestants (Will, much as I love him, and Joshua) and abuse of certain others (Jessica and Comfort). I've never seen the judges be such jerks as they were to Jessica in particular. Maybe the show is starting to look its age.
