Room 512: mid-afternoon, Sunday

Sep 10, 2006 19:25

Evie was reading her World History book and her Myth Into History notes at the same time. It made things slightly confusing, but in an amusing way. Her laptop was out and open on her desk, and the door was open.

Broots knocked politely on the side of the door.

Evie looked up and smiled brightly. "Come in! Thank you so much for doing this, Broots. I really appreciate the help. Would you like a cookie?"

"Yes please." Broots sat down at Evie's desk. "Turn it on for me?"

Evie poked at the power button with one cautious finger, then retrieved her cookie tin from beneath her bed. "Sugar and cinnamon, or raisin? I'm afraid we ate all the plain sugar." She watched the screen *very* warily as the computer started.

"Anything would be nice. And I was hoping you'd type in your password, actually." Broots nabbed a cookie.

"Oh, of course." Evie typed in Hamunaptra111 and then backed away again, nibbling on a cookie herself. "It didn't do it when I started it, it was the browser."

Broots nodded. "That's because the pop-ups come from websites, not your computer." He plugged his flashdrive into the laptop and began typing away.

Evie furrowed her brow in concentration, and said, "Wait, wait, Isabel explained part of this. The web 'sites' are coming through the wires, and they're like, like, remote encyclopedias, and advertisements, and such. Sooooo... if I keep the browser 'shut', I'll never see them either? Well, I wish Ray had *said* that."

"Well...yeah. But you need the browser if you're ever going to go online. Here." He clicked on a few files and waited for something. "Once this is down downloading, it will kill pop-ups for you and you'll never see them again."

"Oooo. Lovely. Download?" Evie peered over his shoulder, and almost knocked over her lamp. "Oh! Sorry! Excuse me, terribly sorry."

'Yeah, um, it's a thing don't make me explain please." Broots frowned. "Do you have Norton?" He put the laptop back into its possition.

"Who?" Evie asked, looking perplexed. "I'm not certain. How would I know?"

Broots clicked a few things and frowned. "You don't. Let me install it as well. And Norton is a program that keeps virus's from getting on your computer. You don't have to do anything, it'll do all the work." He quickly reassured her.

"Viruses? Aren't those diseases?" Evie asked worriedly, taking another cookie and nibbling in anxiety. "Is my computer alive in some way? Because I've heard a great many strange things since I arrived here, and this wouldn't be the strangest."

"Um...no, it's not alive. But virus's are bad programs that make your computer act bad. So Norton finds and kills those viruses." Broots quickly hit a few more keys.

"Ooooo," Evie said, very impressed. "Right, then. Go to it. Kill them all! I mean, um." She turned a little red. "Please fix it so I don't see things like that."
