... yeah, I basically just wanted to use that icon. GEEKS! And sadly, no DW or BSG until the end of this year/beginning of next. Oh well. At least I'll have the New Year's Of Awesomeness to lead up to it. Progressive New Year's, all the way from New Jersey to Connecticut, with Grinnellians geeking all the way. Yes I know it's July, we're planning this already. This fabulous event will include
snacob and
allerion as well as [brooksal1] and [erickson4]. Possible guests also include [gottschl], [millerbr], and [hoyerrol]. If you don't get the brackets, you're either not a Grinnellian or haven't been reading my LJ long enough. Or both.
Okay, after that senseless rant! I'm looking back at my journal and discovering that I haven't updated in a while. As per fucking usual. So, a capsule summary of my life:
May 15th (last entry) - May 22nd: Finish up finals, complete with nearly having a heart attack over having missed that the due date for something was 12 pm rather than 5 pm. Don't screw up too badly at the Belly performance. Pack like a madwoman, make multiple storage runs, help Michelle pack like a madwoman because Michael ain't lifting a finger, and finally drive to Chicago. Flight out on the 22nd, and then I'm in CT. Blissfully.
May 23rd-May 29th: First, reunion with a very old friend from elementary school. A couple of days at home tearing through books (see: the book post) and getting Mason (new dog) to trust me. An awesome day hanging out with
jeteyema,
danhsail, Margaret, and Matt. Spend a day at the Natural History Museum in NYC with Eliot.
May 30th-June 9th: More books. More friends (Gabe aka [johnsong] dropped by).
celestialbacon!!!!! Get a prescription for seasonal allergies. And I cap the whole thing off by introducing
edward1986 to Doctor Who.
June 9th-June 30th: Out to Seattle. I get one day of being a total zombie before I have to report to work... and then sit in front of a computer for 7 hours a day for the next 10 weeks. That's what it turns out to be.
Seriously, I don't mind it that much. I surf the 'net when I'm bored, listen to podcasts, chat with the guy whose computer is next to mine (Eric, one of our lunch group). It was kind of funny how the intern coordinator for the recruited group that I am a part of tried to get us all to make a community... when I'd pretty much already cliqued up with National Marine Mammal Laboratory personnel. Hey, I'm on first name terms with most of the polar group. Seriously, it's pretty cool. Lunch is often the highlight. There's Eric (web designer extraordinaire), Stefen and Me Li (office clerks), Jessica (another techie) and Kym (former intern, now a low-level permanent employee). Plus, as I mentioned, the polar group. Kym works with them, so that was our "in" so to speak. My boss, Chuck, resembles Charles Darwin in appearance. Seriously. He's a nice guy, if he does have a tendency to ramble, and it turns out that I plowed through his project in about half the time he expected me to. Oops.
Anyway, the only thing that's changed fom June 30th on is that: (a) Jonathan and I moved into our own apartment (!!!!) and I discovered that I actually like being domestic; (b) Nigel died (see previous entry) and I am typing this from Sirona the Silver. Yes, I have a pattern in naming my computers.
We've also hung out with Jonathan's friends. There's a Settlers of Catan group that's been trying to meet every weekend and play that game. I get to introduce myself to a bunch of people that Jonathan knows and say "I'm with him" or something along those lines. Nah, it's okay. By now the Settlers group accepts me as an individual as well.
I did also geek out (as previously mentioned) after going to the talks by Jacqueline Carey, Lois McMaster Bujold, and especially this past Monday -- Richard. Fucking. Morgan. I love his books. All of them. He had some great stories to tell -- but I'll point you towards my
book blog, as once I finish reading Thirteen I'm putting up a review that includes a summary of his talk.
So! I have stayed up too late, believe it or not. Meagan's parents are getting us at 7 am tomorrow so I can attend her LDAC graduation (no, I don't know what that acronym means, I just know that it's associated with the Army). They flew out from CT on Tuesday and will be going back in a couple of days. Meagan's been out here for a month. And every time I think about her in the army, I pray with all my heart that she doesn't have to go to Iraq.
And on that happy note, I end this post.
