Last night's third place bout for the Detroit Derby Girls is going to go down as my favorite match so far. So many wonderful things happened last night:
1. I. Love. HoneySuckIt. From the first time I saw her in her little hot pants, I have wanted to put her in my pocket and take her back to the library to "evil eye" my students into returning their books. So, last night, Brett and I were looking around to buy my usual stash of 50/50 tickets and I spot her magenta hair across the hall waving raffle tickets. I grabbed my cash and hurried to her, knowing that this time, it would be fate. I would finally win a prize because my hero sold me the winning ticket.
Well, I got to her and asked for some tickets, only to realize that I had brought a dollar instead of $20. EMBARRASSED!!!! But, she graciously offered to walk back with me to my money. She asked who I was rooting for, and I was totally tongue-tied. The best I could stutter out was "I'm torn" and then something about Brett liking the Pistoffs.
I'm walking a few feet ahead of her and I catch Brett's eye motioning for him to look who's behind me! I mean, this is the biggest moment in my derby life since being sat by Racer McChaseher in the VIP section or my first tagged Derby Girl, Muffy Mafioso, slid into me. But I can't think of anything to say, I'm so star struck. I buy my tickets and she heads off on her way.
I didn't win. But, in a way, I did. :D
2. I. now. LOVE. Cookie Rumble. She's always been a comedic force on the track and I've enjoyed the humorous spirit she brings. Well, last night, she took it to incredible new heights. There's this rookie, Muffy Mafioso (my aforementioned first tag) skating for the Dames. She's done really well at learning the jamming ropes. Well, last night, in a matchup with Cookie Rumble, she got knocked down a notch. Cookie managed to knock her out of bounds. In order for Muffy to make a legal pass through the pack, she'd have to double back and re-pass Cookie. Well, Cookie was having NONE of that. She slowed up to barely maintaining forward motion, backward dodging Muffy every time she'd make an attempt. After maybe a minute of this, Muffy stomped her skates and threw a mini tantrum, sending those of us in the VIP section into a fit of giggles. For the rest of the match, whenever the two were on the track, Cookie would torment her, even getting purposely put in the penalty box for starting a jam BEHIND Muffy, even though Cookie wasn't the jammer for the Pistoffs.
(Racer McChaseher was none too happy about this. She's had a really tough season and I truly feel for the Phenom. She's an excellent skater and you can tell she loves the sport. I'm hoping everyone made up at the after bout.)
3. Effin Money - How I missed you! She really did an amazing job last night and I was so happy to finally see her back. I loved watching her smile and laugh her way through the jams.
Really... it was a SPECTACULAR match. It was almost always tied during the first period. I think Cookie managed to break the Dames' spirit, allowing the Pistoffs to clench the win, but it was a really entertaining match filled with thrills and spills (including a high speed collision with the crowd that sent a skater - dunno who - through the suicide spectators and all the way back to the chairs!)

Brett and I have been trying to come up with an alternate wedding plan befitting our personalities since the Bret Michaels Vegas wedding fell through. Our latest thought is that we are really, really hoping that we can get the Detroit Derby Girls to let us get married at one of their practices this summer. We LOVE the derby and it is definitely something that speaks of the kind of people that we are. It'd be the perfect blend of sincerity and goofiness.
Here's what we've imagined: We invite 30 or so friends and family to the arena. We want to get Brett's friend Travis ordained to perform the ceremony, since he knows Brett really well and knows me well enough to make it something pertinent. We have a simple little ceremony somewhere in the rink, then the Derby Girls do some sort of scrimmage match. Afterward, we have our "reception" in the form of a skating party. (Brett doesn't know how to roller skate, but we've got a few weeks to get him trained up - I'd totally love for us to have a choreographed "first skate"!!!!)
We have an email in to Devil Kitty via the ddg website and I shamelessly scrawled our plea all over my fan survey when I turned it in last night. While I'm not getting my hopes up, it'd really be great if we could somehow make this happen.
If not, our next plan (which is totally the "throw in the towel and just get it done" option) is to go to some park somewhere, exchange our vows, and then go have dinner at a restaurant. lame.
We have picked out the location of our honeymoon, though. We're getting a cabin in Pigeon Forge, TN and celebratin' our nuptials hillwilliam style. I'm EXCITED about this plan. I love the drive and I love the kitschiness of the area. Plus, we can go on hikes in the Smokies. It'll be awesome!
