Are you ready for some Roller Derby?

On Saturday night, I got to take Brett to see the Detroit Derby Girls skate against Cincinnati. We also took with us his best friend and the best friend's girlfriend (yeahyeah - but she used to be mine!) to introduce them to the spectacle.  What a night!

The match itself was pretty good.  While it was a total blowout in Detroit's favor, I absolutely fell in love with Sadistic Sadie, Cincinnati's main skater.  She was sassy and played to the crowd even more than, say, Honey Suck-it's Stink-Eye-of-Death or Cookie Rumble's Battle Fisticuffs that she shows off when she's introduced.  I found myself glued to her just to see how she'd antagonize her opponents.  I'd LOVE to see her come skate here.  Especially up against Honey Suck-It (didn't skate due to injury) as they seem to match each other in stature and style.

I'd be totally remiss if I didn't mention the halftime entertainment.  Normally, you get the Motor City Rah-Rahs doing their routine followed by the musical stylings of some incarnation of the same band.  This time, we had a real treat, albeit a really BIZARRE one.   When we walked into the Drill Hall, I noticed this huge pink thing dangling down from the ceiling.  Brett's friend asked what that was about and I didn't have an answer, having never seen it before.  Then I noticed on the bout poster that the usual band was not listed and instead there was a mysterious "Warrior Girl" listed in their place.  At halftime, the announcers announce "The aerialistic stylings of Warrior Girl."  OH...  It was a swing...!

So, she comes out on skates, dressed up as Marilyn Monroe (yes, you already know there's trouble) and has to be dragged around the ring by her two assistants because she can't really skate.  She does this for a few minutes, alternating with an occasional swing dance moves and kisses to her girlfriend.  The next song starts and she strips off her skates and socks.  Then she finally gets in the swing and starts flipping around.  That part of her bit was really interesting and totally fit the derby aesthetic.  It was just rough leading up to it.  Warrior Girl has her own channel on YouTube.  Here's a video similar to what we saw:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym0ht3cQa1Y .

I can't even express how excited I am about my season tickets.  I already have friends lining up to come with me if Brett can't make it.  Come on November 1st!

roller derby, brett
