La Cage aux Folles

So, last night I went to see John Barrowman inna dressLa Cage aux Folles and had a wonderful evening all round. Nice noodles in Chinatown, a stroll down Northumberland Avenue, and seats at the back of the dress circle with a great view of the stage.

The dancers were amazing, although the waxing that must have gone on made me wince in sympathy. Waxing, shaving or cream? There was a debate at one point... They all have far better legs than me, which is fairly sickening really. Simon Burke was superb as Georges, and John Barrowman's Albin was very good, he camped up beautifully.

There were a couple of things I would have liked to have seen - a bit more of a relationship between the son (Jean-Michele) and Albin, showing that John-Michele really does love him and views him as a parent. It felt a bit as if it was Georges telling J-M that he did, up until the end. It is a very sad story in many places, which only really came across at the end. The final song with Albin and Georges on the steps was heartwrenchingly good, and focused the emotion.

Most of us stagedoored afterwards, which was fun (see earlier post for a photo). Surreal note of the evening was when morganmuffle and I were talking to a woman who said that she thought JB was really good, and she'd even seen the show where he looked for "why he was the way he was" [ie gay]. She said it had made her understand it a bit more, and "as long as they didn't do it in front of her it was fine". I think she might have missed the point of the show we had just seen...

morganmuffle and I caught the tube back to King's Cross St P (probably causing amusement/concern among the other passengers by fangirling shamelessly), and I managed to catch a semi-fast train with two minutes to spare. I was home by half past midnight, although it took me quite a long while to actually sleep...
