I have no idea how many people read this journal, and really that's not the reason why a person should LJ in the first place. But today I hope many do, for 2 reasons.
bandgeek is trying to start an auction for donations. She's putting up two handmade scarves from her very lovely hands, which will go to the highest bidders. At least, I think she is. The whole thing is in the gestation stage, but I'm starting the bidding on Scarf #1 at $100. The charity donation is to the charity of your choice.
Here's my second reason for posting today --
http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/ This will take you to Pasado's Safe Haven. They're an wonderful organization, trying to help out with lost, abandoned, injured and scared animals devastated by Katrina just like humans. In many cases, people were advised they would not be rescued if they tried to bring their pets. At this time, FEMA and the health organization have decided that animals (primarily dogs) who are wandering the streets have become a danger because they may now be feral, and possibly eating from corpses floating around. These dogs, which may number well into the tens of thousands, will now be shot on sight.
Pasado arrived in NOLA yesterday, opened their rescue tent, and immediately received over 600 lost animals. Today they're going door to door in NOLA, trying to rescue pets who have been without food and their owners since Katrina hit. In this time, I realize humans are suffering greatly. And we need to take care of them. But these pets -- creatures that humans have tamed and brought into our lives as completely dependant beings -- they need us, too. I cannot fathom what pain people felt having to leave a bowl of food on the floor of the attic, praying they'd be back for their cat, dog, pig, bird, snake, ferret... The list is endless, and I pray to many gods these animals can be saved.
So. My bid of $100 goes to Pasado. I encourage everyone to bid on Scarf #2, or even to outbid me on #1. At this point I feel like
just_eunice and I should auction off a vid or something. Bidder's choice.... of course, I should probably ask her before committing anything...
Don't forget the animals, my friends. A society that cannot protect children and animals is destined for madness and destruction.
