iPod just shuffled a song my way I haven't heard in a long time. And I remembered how much I adore this idea:
I want to be loved like that
A promise you can't take back
If you're gonna love me
I want to be loved like that
*sigh* It would be sweet, and to anyone who has that I tip my hat in your direction.
I've noticed Vancouver 2010 figure skating hasn't really popped my corn. There've been a few programs I loved, but overall I find the intense pressure to perform ever-bigger jumps or strange holds and angles to get more points leaves me cold. Routine after routine I found myself saying "Huh" at the end, not really invested. So, thinks I, is this the new points system destroying my beloved ice dance? This crop of skaters in pairs or singles just isn't up to snuff?
Last night I decided to watch recordings of various routines I've hoarded over the years - it's VHS so I was rocking it Old School - and first was Katarina Witt and I'm having the same reaction. Crap! Have I lost the love over the years? But then Torvill and Dean's comeback in Lillehammer appeared… I still swoon. Gordeeva and Grinkov skating to Moonlight Sonata still gives me goosebumps. Michelle Kwan… I could watch her spiral around the rink for 3 minutes and be happy. Kurt Browning, Scotty H., Ponomarenka and Klimova…. Mmmm.
All of it still worked for me, so I think maybe it's the new scoring system. Because several performances make me think the artistry, edging and musicality is still there; it's just not rewarded enough I feel. I don't think for a moment this new system is any less political or tougher to corrupt. In fact, I think it's less transparent than the 6.0 system. But no one put me in charge, so I s'pose I'll hold out for the skaters who can transcend it.
Last but not least, thank you
keswindhover for my birthday wish!!
