Temp goes up to 44deg celcius = bookworm refusing to stay at home = watching The Hobbit again.
So! Let's have a proper review then.
First: HFR vs Standard
Actually, I think I rather prefer the HFR version? The 3D does not, so far as I can tell, add much to the experience, but the HFR is especially telling in the battle scenes - I actually watched the HFR first, and going back to standard is actually quite jarring to not be able to clearly see what's going on. The only scenes which suffered, I think, were the Dale ones - I'd guess because of their oversaturated, golden memory quality, to see things clearly was a tad offputting. Also, it was RIGHT at the start, when you are still getting used to the new frame rate. Also the warg-riders suffer a bit, and any scene overly CGI'd was a bit obviously so.
Second: Galadriel
I think I liked her portrayal better the second time around. Political!Galadriel sits better with me than CreepyGlowing!Galadriel anyway - it's more true to the Galadriel of the books and I never did like how PJ chose to portray her in LOTR. HOWEVER. WHEN DID SHE LEARN TO TELEPORT. I AM PRETTY SURE THIS IS NOT IN HER SKILLSET. The Gandalf bit... *sigh* Well, ok they are old friends, and I'd guess she's one of the few who knows him as Olorin the Maia as well as Mithrandir the Istar. But really, PJ, really? You are giving the shipping fans ALL SORTS of ammunition. TOLKIEN ELVES MARRY FOR LIFE. SHE IS REALLY HAPPY WITH HER HUSBAND. STOP PAIRING HER WITH OTHER PEOPLE. Speaking of, where IS Celeborn, anyway? He wasn't called "The Wise" for nothing.
Third: Radagast
I.. am of mixed emotions about Radagast. One the one hand, YAY RADAGAST. That I get him in a movie at all makes me all gleefully nerdy. On the other... He's mm, a bit more like some fusion of Bombadil and Radagast, I suppose than how I've pictured him? Aiwendel always struck me as more of a ... fade into the background character, which movie Radagast couldn't do if he tried. Having said that, I really love the Bunny Sled, and the bird in his hair is genius! Also his hedgehogs are adorable and I distinctly remember doing a quest like that in LOTRO. Moving on!
Fourth: Bilbo
Martin Freeman is perfect. It did take a bit to shed John Watson, but once that's settled - yeah, he was the only one to play Bilbo since Ian Holm can't. ...I am going to have plot bunnies involving Smaug-comes-back-as-Sherlock aren't I.
Fifth: Thorin
Oh Thorin. His beard was a less impressive than I would like, but I quite like him, I think. He's a bit surlier than I remember him being, (and I want to bean him with a clue bat on occasion) but overall, Richard Armitage captures him very well I think. Also I totally agree with whoever it was who reckoned he had a head injury based on his behaviour right at the end lol XD
Sixth: The Other Dwarves
I really hope we get to see more of them, as time goes on. I am quite fond on Bofur, with his elaborate Baggins-fainting-inducing dragon description. And Fili and Kili appeal to the side of me that likes young hot-headed idiots with hearts of gold (and wants to smack sense into them, but hey). I would LIKE to like the others, but I haven't really had much to go on them yet (admittedly, this is even WORSE in the book, where only Thorin gets any real character development). I still get goosebumps listening to them sing "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold" and the fact that SPOILERTHEMAJORITYOFTHEMDIESPOILER makes me wibble a lot.
Seventh: Gandalf is awesome and I want his scarf. The end.
Eighth: I WANT MY ELF TWINS AND GLORFINDEL. Also Erestor wants to know when Lindir took his job. Why does Elrond need to ride to war? He has Glorfindel and the twins for that.
Ninth: Will I get to see Estel? PLEASE SAY YES PJ.
Tenth: DRAGONDRAGONDRAGON =D
Eleventh: Thranduil.... I will reserve judgement on for now, seeing as all he's done is raise eyebrows at people so far.
Twelfth: LOVE the Trolls. And the Goblin King. Wargs.... ehhhhhhhh. Still look fake, sorry guys. What's Azog doing here? Dain killed him in Moria and then took one look, realised a Balrog was down there and beat feet. It's supposed to be Bolg, his son, running around now. Eh, he's pretty impressive to look at though, we'll see how this plays out.
Thirteenth: RIDDLES IN THE DARK = MY FAV SCENE.
Fourteenth: DRAGONDRAGONDRAGON.
In short: It isn't QUITE "The Hobbit", but hey, I don't have any issues with LOTR:Lite. Can't wait til next year! ...must see it agai
