Happy New Year, Fandom!

Jan 04, 2014 12:43

I just wanted to post a quick Happy New Year wish and virtual hug to my fandom friends who mainly hang out here on LJ. Here's hoping that Doctor Who, Supernatural, Star Trek, and Sherlock all have an exciting year ahead!

Now that my daughter has gotten us into Tumblr and Twitter with her I'm not at LJ as much, except to read fic which has been linked by a rec or post elsewhere. I have run into some of you guys over on Tumblr and have had a lot of fun squeeing about our fandoms regularly, but quick notes and passing gifs around for squee aren't the same as immersing your mind in an extended universe which expands the bounds of your favorite show and challenges your mind.

IMO Tumblr fic suffers because of the format; LJ fic can just be.....more: more words; more art attached and interspersed; more ability to leave comments which become discussions, and not just "heart" things; more depth; and more connected stories which become a whole alternate world.

I think I owe LJ and my favorite LJ communities an apology! I get annoyed at the vagaries of LJ bugs and head to Tumblr in a huff, but then my daughter sends me what she and her friends think of as a huge and important Tumblr fanfic and it is what we have always considered a quick one-shot, sometimes approaching a comment fic. I sent her a copy of Big Pink's "Red" to read over Xmas break and she thought it was a SPN tie-in book I had purchased for her from Amazon. That certainly says a lot about where fic writing and expectations have moved.

So! I am sorry LJ! I repent heartily, my fandom friends who stay in the LJ world and participate in various communities! My resolution for 2014 is to come to LJ more often, although I have to say the intoxication of participating in fandom "as you are watching it" together with people in 96 countries is incredible. I am determined to come back to LJ and try to do my tiny best to keep the fanfic community active and alive. Long live long fanfics and long comments and long meta.

I am going to try and make some new friends this year, so if I send you a friend note it is because you seem interested in keeping interesting fanfiction coming, too! I hope we succeed. Happy New Year, fandom!
