If you replace "money" with "race," then U.S. history has recorded several instances of white communities in Virginia and other parts of the South fighting the integration of blacks because they don't want "those people" bringing down the quality of their precious neighborhoods. I can't see where it would be any different in a corporate mindset.
Basically, you need corporations that either control or easily influence the government to get the financial caste system proposed in the book. Just look at the recent mess with the government oil regulators and how the big oil companies had them eating out of their hands. The Wall Street financial types had a similar control of the current government until the subprime mortgage mess backfired on them. Health companies that could harvest replacement organs or develop new medicines or "Fountain of Youth" cures through stem cell research could easily have the same control over the government.
How soon? Probably not in our lifetimes. However, as long as the "Greed is good" mentality exists, it will happen.
