Nate Silver is my sapiosexual lust object.

Jan 24, 2009 00:59

Friends, I just can't hold it in anymore.

I, I, I have to talk about Nate Silver, guys. I, I, I, *swoon*. I love this hero in geek clothing, I love him so much he invades my other fandoms. I even learned a new dictionary word today because of him: "Psephology -n. the science of analysing elections."

In honor of this, and because the wonderful 538, website of election dreams and math nerds, was just nominated for the 2009 Weblog Awards in 3 categories including Blog Of The Year (go!!! vote for Nate!), I give you:

PSEPHOLOGY: A METHODOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF NATE SILVER

evercourant: "I have a theory that Nate Silver is a smirky bastard made to be PLUNDERED in bed".

Gorgeous smirky bastard you want to PLUNDER, right this way:

In case you've been living under a rock weren't aware, Nate is the creator of FiveThirtyEight.com, the magical, statistics-driven poll analysis website that correctly predicted the election outcome down to within a handful of electoral votes and all but one state result.

    (He is also a wizard.)

"Baseball Prospectus is like The Bible to stat geeks, and PECOTA is like a particularly important passage in that Bible (John 3:16, for example), so the fact that this 30-year-old guy who made it up is suddenly the hottest thing in political polling is unlikely and heartwarming to sports fans and political obsessives alike." - Gawker

“When we took him to preschool one time, we dropped him off, and he announced, ‘Today, I’m a numbers machine,’ and started counting,” Brian Silver said. “When we picked him up two and a half hours later, he was ‘Two thousand one hundred and twenty-two, two thousand one hundred and twenty-three...’ ”

Nate: "I predict the Cubs won't win the world series. :D"

Stephen: "How would you describe the election in baseball terms?"
Nate: "Bottom of the 9th, McCain's down two runs, and Sarah Palin just got picked off first base." :D :D :D :D :D :D
Also, LOOK AT STEPHEN'S FANBOY GLOW OF APPROVAL AS HE TRIES HARD TO STAY IN CHARACTER AND NOT LAUGH AT NATE'S MCCAIN SNARK:

LOVE. STEPHEN COLBERT LOVES NATE SILVER, FANDOM NATION, AND SO CAN YOU. *___*

post-election, Nate shows his pair to conservative talk show quack John Ziegler:
NS: Well, since you’re running a website calling people misinformed, I’d like to see if -- there are certain things you’ve said that I would consider misinformed.
JZ: Misinformed? You're a piece of work! You are never going to have the guts to post a representative transcript on your website! I thought you actually ran a legitimate website!
NS: Thank you, have a good day.
    JZ: Go fuck yourself.

Nate Silver, on Sarah Palin: "McCain had to take a risk because he was so far behind, but it was a big risk. It violated the first rule of picking a vice presidential candidate, which is 'Do no harm.' "

Nate: "When my parents wouldn't let me play computer games, I started to make my own."

there’s a Facebook group called “There’s a 97.3 Percent Chance That Nate Silver Is Totally My Boyfriend”

Look at this Chicago native write so so so smartly and prettily and, have i mentioned i love him yet:
If Bill Clinton was the first black president, then Barack Obama might be the first urban one. He is the only American president in recent history to seem unembarrassed about claiming a personal residence in a major American city.... Obama's election may also represent something more - if not a sign that America's psyche has changed then at least that its demographics are on the move. We may still romanticize some of the more familiar, rurally oriented narratives of presidents past: the Ronald Reagan frontiersman caricature (which both Sarah Palin and John McCain tried to co-opt at various times) or the Bill Clinton born-in-a-small-town shtick (see also: Edwards, John; Huckabee, Mike). Fewer and fewer of us, however, have actually lived those experiences.... Republicans trail Democrats among essentially every fast-growing demographic except the elderly - the youth vote, the Latino vote; they never had the black vote. It is long past time that they hone their pitch to urban voters, and find their shining city upon a hill.

Nate and fandom:

Currently there is only one Nate Silver fic in the world (that I know of), and I only know of it because I wrote it (by request). It's a Rahm/Nate drabble, and I fell a little in love with the idea of Nate!fic while writing it. Look at this kid's smirk, wasn't it just made to go head-to-head with Rahm Emanuel's shark-eating grin? .

Nate, on the Obama transition: "Obama seems very ambitious about what he wants to accomplish.... I think people will be interested in what he’s doing. And there’s all this fascination over his chief of staff…"

Cathy: nate sneaks into the white house to see rahm
Aja: obama will be like "hey, nate silver!" and let him just kind of hang out like kato
Cathy: obama is like LET'S WATCH SOME NEWS, YOU CAN TELL ME SOME MATH.
nate: .....okay. :?
Aja: then they'll just stare avidly at him waiting for him to quote statistics
Cathy: i just imagine rahm like throwing him into press conferences just to lol, and barack rolls his eyes
Aja: rahm would be like "hey, guys, my friend nate's here, any of you putzes want to ask him questions about the economy?" :D
Cathy: nate is like NO STOP RAHM WHAT ARE YOU DOING and the press is like YES
Aja: Rahm would be like :D
Cathy: and nate is like noooooooo
Cathy: and barack is like HEY GUYS I'M STILL HERE

____

Nate on gay marriage, and his status as "a gay icon:" "I think the country needs to grow up a little bit and realize that gaymarriage does no harm to anyone. I don't even think the issue isparticularly philosophically complex.... (S)o far it seems like I'm more a subject of geek affection than gay affection.... I got a (straight) marriage proposal in my inbox the other day (which for any number of reasons, I turned down). But in general, the whole thing is a terrific confidence-booster. I'm just focused now on trying to build out the 538 brand and making sure I keep getting to do this stuff for a long time."

We hope you do too, Nate. We hope you do, too. ♥
