I also kind of want an answer for seii_ryu's question, too. Because lololololol this is why he is Dumbledore. They were both born, like, old. Well, Dumbledore significantly older than Tezuka. But yes.
Hmm... Maybe when one is so devoutly focused on a singular task or goal -- ie. tennis -- they can more easily grow out of stages of immaturity or childishness. I feel like Tezuka was born a tennis player, and he knew it. Maybe since he was (and is) so driven, he just always seemed much older. (And in a medium like manga/anime, an easy way to reflect that drive/focus/passion would be through a deeper voice and taller height...)
Either that or he took lots of growth hormones so he and Ryoma would have a significant height difference and I would be happy. :P
I think he was a naturally quiet, focused child, and I have a feeling his grandfather worked to heighten those traits. 10.5 gives some tantalizing hints about the Tezukas, and one of them is that Kunikazu (grandfather) is somewhat contemptuous of and/or disappointed in Kuniharu (father), who is only a typical salaryman while Kunikazu is a judo instructor for the police. There's also a great shot of Kunikazu and Kunimitsu next to each other, in which you see that Kunimitsu really is the image of his grandfather (though he appears to have his father's rather untidy hair), right down to the stern expression
