"i would love to have a conversation with a customer that doesn't end with me feeling like humanity has no hope."
I know that sometimes a hectic holiday season can leave us feeling drained and disillusioned with our jobs and humanity in general. In fact, there are times that I will jokingly say that retail is proof positive that people are assholes. But sometimes, there are conversations that will leave you with a new faith in humanity instead of drained. I think we should take the time to share some of those stories here.
I'll go first:
Last year, when The Golden Compass was the big news story, due to the movie coming out, I had one of my regular customers come in and make her weekly purchases. As I was scanning the books, we were having our normal friendly chat. This is a customer that usually orders in several books on Catholic doctrine, saints, and... well, you get the idea. Not a likely candidate for what happened next.
Me: Wow, you got The Golden Compass? That's a pretty good book.
Regular: Well, since everybody's in an uproar about it, I figured I'd read the book, so that if I object to it, I know what I'm objecting to.
Given some of the reactionaries that you hear and see so much of, it's nice every once in a while to see somebody come in and make an informed decision.
So, what's your story?
