Recommended Daily Allowance of Iron(y)

As you may or may not have heard, experts are now saying that we should not eat fresh or bagged spinach unless we are for some reason interested in dying of E coli. (And I doubt that anyone is. I mean, really. Death by spinach is just embarassing-- I bet the Popeye jokes would get old really quick-- and far too ironic for my taste. Dying because you ate all your vegetables? Please.)

Anyhow, several of the items in the store's cafe feature spinach in various unnatural and unpleasant combinations. The manager took it upon himself to reassure the staff that the food was not going to kill us any quicker than the job itself would, and read a preprepared statement to that effect. "The FDA has warned us not to eat fresh spinach-- or any dish prepared with fresh spinach," he told us, not taking his eyes off his paper. "However, there's no need to worry about any of the spinach dishes served in our cafe--"

He was probably going to say something else, but several of the quicker staff members (myself, immodestly enough, among them) broke out laughing at his phrasing-- I mean, we all had a pretty good idea that the bakery items weren't what you might call fresh, but having official confirmation, well...

He wasn't as amused as we were.
