I used to get this all the time in bookstore and in the college library. Added to that the students who don't know what book or periodical they need because they either can't be bothered to do research or are too lazy, but expect the bookseller/librarian to listen to the details of their essay and tell them everything the need and then pick out the books for them... In the bookstore we still had to be semi-polite, but in the library we were allowed to tell them we can help you find a specific book but we're not here to research your essay for you - next, please!
Worse than the parents or school students who would come in demanding specific versions of a book required right that weekend would be teachers who would phone up to complain that we ran out and many of their class didn't get the required book. Hmmm, did you think to contact us a week or two in advance and warn us you were going to send in 30 kids looking for a specific edition of this book? Well, no, I just kind of assumed you magically knew without me saying, because booksellers know everything... That's even more depressing than stupid and ill-prepared students - these are the people teaching them: no wonder the students are so dim...
