Giles turned and looked at Fred when she told him her choice. "I think perhaps I'll have the same. Living in the states for so long has spoiled me. Amazing the things I no longer like here," he told her. He moved himself over to the telephone and rang the kitchen. It only took a few moments for him to place the order ( ... )

Fred took the brochures from Giles with a pang of disappointment. She wanted to spend time with Willow, but she realized that she also would have really liked it if Giles had offered to show her some of the sights in London. Looking down at the pictures on the cover of the glossy booklets in her hand then back up at him.

"I know there are places everyone is supposed to visit when they're in England, especially London - the castles, London Bridge, stuff like that. But I'd kind of like to see some of the...not so touristy things," she told him. "Maybe some places you might know about."

She looked up at him as he joined her at the window, her ears perking up at the mention of Bath. "Oh...I read Persuasion while I was working at the Los Angeles Public Library several years ago. Actually, it was last book I read before I...before Pylea. I spent my first days there playing it over in my head. I kept imagining Bath in my head and wishing how I was there instead of...there. I would love to see it - I really would."

At least she wanted to spend some time with him, which relieved Giles. “Perhaps on Saturday we can go. If the weather is nice, I could take you on one of the walking tours, without a tour guide of course,” he said with a smile. There was another pause, something Giles was beginning to hate. He wished he better conversationalist ( ... )

The idea of going to Bath with Giles excited Fred a great deal, so even if the job situation somehow didn't turn out to be in the end what she hoped, she was looking forward to that, and she had a feeling that having him giving her a tour was going to be better than any professional tour, especially since it appeared he knew the area very well. She was so excited about the prospect that she almost missed his comment about this Travers' nephew and his apparent prediliction for shooting foxes ( ... )

If this was the closest Fred had gotten to a date in years, then Giles knew he had to do something special for her. He also needed to do something about the table between them. Keeping a hold of her hand, Giles maneuvered around the table and pulled his chair over so he could sit next to her. “There’s this place in Bath that’s nice. I could take you there,” he suggested before adjusting his glasses ( ... )

"That sounds like it would be wonderful," she told him, glad that he had moved to join her on the other side of the table. If he had a place in Bath, she was sure he knew the best places to go there ( ... )

Giles was a little disappointed that their evening was already coming to an end. Yet, he knew they would see each other in a few hours. “I had a wonderful evening, Fred,” he said before leaning forward and softly kissing her cheek. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

He went to the door, knowing if he stayed a moment longer he wouldn’t leave. Glancing at her one more time, Giles smiled and left the room. He went to the lift, the smile still on his face and hummed to himself as he rode it to the first floor. Things were finally looking up for him.

*****When the morning came again, Giles woke up with sense of renewal. His first thoughts went to Fred and he pondered calling her. But he quickly decided against it, not wanting to push himself onto her. He wanted her to make the first move, if there was a move to be had. Instead of ringing her, Giles took a shower and then stood in front of his closet for ten minutes ( ... )

Even though Fred tried to go to sleep not long after Giles left, she found herself lying in bed, running the evening over and over in her mind. Something in her life seemed to be going right for the first time in so long. She really liked Rupert, and she couldn't wait to see him the next day, even if they would have to be professional, at least during the interview ( ... )

The meeting was dreadfully long. When Giles told them he'd finally hired someone to run the lab. Of course the rest of them had a million questions about Fred. He had to watch his tongue so he wouldn't tell how wonderful and beautiful she was. Giles really didn't think they wanted to know that ( ... )

"Willow, we need to get back to Giles' office - he said he would be out of the meeting after a couple of hours," Fred said, looking at her watch. She had been having a great time, seeing the building and meeting some of the other people who worked there, including Xander Harris. Poor Xander looked to have gone through a hell of a time recently - he had lost his eye in the fight with the First Evil - but he had kept his sense of humor, and Fred had enjoyed meeting him ( ... )

When Fred approached his desk, Giles stood and walked around to the other side. "I'm glad Willow showed you around. I tend to avoid certain areas." Like Xander's department but Giles didn't want to say that. "And the meeting? Painfully long. But they seem quite happy that I've found someone for the lab. Of course all of them want to meet you as soon as you get settled."

It was at that time when Andrew decided to pop his head into the office and smile. "Everything is taken care of, Mr. Giles," he proudly said.

"Thank you, Andrew," Giles answered before looking at Fred. "I need to get something from Andrew's desk. I'll be right back."

He walked out of his office and returned with a bouquet of fresh red roses. "Congratulations on getting the job," Giles said with a stupid little smile. He held out the flowers and waited for her to take them. "I didn't know what flower was your favorite so I guessed. I hope you like them."

Fred wondered what he was up to when he disappeared from the office for a moment. She hadn't known him long, but she could see that he had something up his sleeve.

Luckily, she didn't have to wait long, and her eyes opened wide in amazement when he returned with the bouquet of roses. Reaching out, she took them from him, touching the soft petals with her fingertips before inhaling their fragrance.

"These are beautiful. I love roses no matter what the color, so these are perfect. I never expected--thank you, Rupert." Bouncing slightly on her toes, she leaned forward and gave him a kiss on on the cheek. "This has to be one of the sweetest things someone's ever done for me."

She took his hand as she gazed down at the roses again.

"Willow is right. You are the best," she told him, raising her head back up and locking eyes with him.
