it would be interesting to do a poll sort of thing at the end of this when all the books have been read, to see how many people really found their books to be what the list claims them to be - a "must read before you die" sort of a book. :)

Yes indeed. I consider my two books so far to be 50/50. I've read most, but not quite all of the reviews so far and without counting, I feel like it's running about that overall.

Of course, it could be argued that that's a reflection of the self-selected responders to this challenge. Perhaps we're not the target audience for the list.

So far, I've only seen one review for a book I've read previously (Casino Royale) and I agreed with the reviewer that it isn't a great book, much as I enjoyed it as a teen. It will be interesting to see if other reviewers of books I've already read will continue to match my feelings.

On Amazon, it says, "For discerning bibliophiles and readers who enjoy unforgettable classic literature, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die is a trove of reviews covering a century of memorable writing. Each work of literature featured here is a seminal work key to understanding and appreciating the written word."

If this is supposed to be the case, then Good Morning, Midnight is an even worse choice than my first book, which I loathed more. I think accepting this challenge properly requires the ability to distinguish between what one enjoys and what is good, if necessary. That's where discernment comes in. And I think you're right in that at least some of the self-selected responders are not the target audience for this list.
