Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen

Northanger Abbey
Jane Austen

Only Slightly Misleading One-Sentence Summary: Heroine Catherine Morland looks for love among the eligible bachelors at Bath and finds herself transported to a country manor strikingly similar to those in the (highly estimable, mind you) Gothic novels she is wont to read.

Review Spoiler Alert: I Liked It. )

I recently read my first Austen novel (Pride and Prejudice), and like you, found it an unexpected delight, with very sharp satirical commentary on the status of women hidden beneath what so many mistake for a fluffy romance.

Northanger Abbey is actually the next Austen novel I'm planning to read. I'm glad you liked it. :)

If you liked Northanger Abbey, a look at the Gothic novels it's satirizing might be awesome. I suggest Matthew Lewis' The Monk and William Beckford's Vathek.

NA was my first JA novel that I read. I liked it. I haven't read anything else yet. Actually, I did try reading Mansfield Park but couldn't get into it. I'm going to give it another try along with some of her other books.

I love Jane Austen, and Northanger Abbey is so much fun! It has such wonderful, quotable lines; my favorite is, "A woman, especially, if she have the misfortune of knowing anything, should conceal it as well as she can."

I would definitely recommend reading more of Austen's novels; they get more mature and subtle as she goes along, but the humor is still there!
