Pretend it's Tuesday

My Tuesday kind of flew by so I didn't get to post this.

My daughter's turning fourteen, and I want her to spend the summer being productive, otherwise she'll sit around reading manga and eating. Not that these are BAD things, but I don't want them to be the ONLY things she does. So I told her she needs to "be productive" two hours a day. Our definition for being productive equates to "something that benefits you or someone else." Exercise, volunteer work, reading non-fiction, going above and beyond her usual chores, doing a favor for someone, taking lessons in something, whatever. But I wanted to give her some reading options too; stuff she'll enjoy but will make her think.

So I want to give her a list of about 10-15 sci-fi books from which she has to choose five, and can read more if she wants. I'm trying to determine what should be on this list. So far I have Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Feed by Mira Grant (because I got it for the Kindle when it was cheap). I was also thinking Fledgling, but maybe that's a little too heavy for her. Same with 1984. She's already read The Illustrated Man, or else I'd put that on there too. I love me some Bradbury.

Suggestions? Opinions? She loves sci-fi so this probably won't come off to her with the resentment some of us spoke about with required summer reading.

suggestions, ott
