A Million Little Quotation Marks, and other spoiler-free questions

So I was not expecting there to be no quotation marks in this whole book. It's a big off-putting, and I'm not really sure it adds anything.

What do you guys think of this usage? What is it supposed to give the reader? What are some other books where quotation marks aren't used/something's used in its place, and did you enjoy it?

For example, Kristin McCloy's excellent book Some Girls has, I believe, dashes. I didn't actually find that to be a problem like I do the utter lack of anything. What about other languages, where they use other types of punctuation to mark dialog?
