Astonishing

You know those moments when you realize you're living in the future? Like when you suddenly just think "I have entire libraries worth of books at my fingertips and I'm publishing messages to people all over the world while I'm sitting in my bedroom!"

So I had one of those, but it involved fandom and literature. This is going somewhere, and connects to BSC if you follow my rambling.

So, I've recently gotten waaay into My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic, which had involved spending hours watching Pony Music Videos. (MLP fanvids.) This inevitably leads to me wanting to make one, despite having no idea how and the fact that my cheap laptop couldn't handle the editing anyway, but I digress.

So at the same time, I was listening to the song I would want to use. I would want to use clips of Rainbow Dash. (Rainbow Dash looks like this, and acts kind of like Abby would is she was a pegasus who could fly at supersonic speeds. So even more cocky.)

Now here's a verse from the song I would want to use:

I will blaze until I find my time and place
I will be fearless,
Surrendering modesty and grace
I will not disappear without a trace
I'll shout and start a riot
Be anything but quiet
Christopher Columbus
I'll be Astonishing
Astonishing
Astonishing
At Last

If the "Christopher Columbus" didn't tip you off, that song is Astonishing, from the musical version of Little Women, and it's sung by Jo.

And I was suddenly struck by it. For so long, Jo was the only one, the only unashamed tomboy, the only girl who would go toe to toe with the men. George, from Nancy Drew, snuck in there after a while. But now, Jo is everywhere. She's in Kristy and Abby, in Rainbow Dash and Applejack, in Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games and Arya Stark from A Game of Thrones.

I'm not saying that any or all of these things reach the quality of Little Women. But. . . I wonder if Louisa May Alcott ever thought there would be a day when this would be so normal? When these characters would be presented as just how girls act?

So yeah, I don't think anyone can say how Miss Alcott would feel about any of those characters. But I think she'd be pretty impressed that they exist. And for right now, I am too.

mlp, thoughts
