for a change of pace, i've taken up to reading more teen fiction novels. unlike my romance novels, they tend to have a good blend of the romance i so long for and adventure.
since i have a major hunkering for supernatural and paranormal stories i picked the Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong and the Wicked Lovely Series by Melissa Marr.
Darkest Powers is centred around a teenage necromancer (someone who can raise the dead). She and a few other teenagers with supernatural abilities have been experimented on, and have broken free and are or the run.
The Wicked Lovely series is about Celtic folklore. each story is about different courts and youth's that are being drawn into the Faery world, changing their lives.
the Darkest Powers trilogy is a very straight forward, and linear storyline with the entire plot moving with 4 characters. Wicked lovely follows a different protagonist in each installment, but still relatively linear in progression.
i find myself comepletely immersed in the Darkest Powers world, while Wicked lovely leaves me feeling frusrated and confussed as the story goes on.
the story and characters of Darkest Powers are absolutely captivating and natural. the story seems to unfold seamlessly and naturally, and i'm sucked into that world completely when i open the book. plus did i mention i have a major crush on a certain pre-trans werewolf. (what is it with me a werewolf boys; first Jacob, and now Derek.)
but Wicked Lovely makes me scratch my head everytime i open it. instead of the story and characters developing naturally, i feel like i'm being hammered over the head with words, forcing the developments on me. and while the story unfolds in linear chronological order, within each book, the plot unfolds so unnaturally: events unfold all the over the place and it's so hard to follow, and then at the end of a "sequence" when a big change happens, the words read like a forced thought or discovery, almost like saying, "oh yea, this is what happened. you just have to expect it and don't expect me to recap how it happened". honestly, i've never read such a frustrating set of books ever. but i'm still trucking along because i want to know what happens. =S
it's my first venture back into the teen finction realm since Twilight. i'm happy that i have managed to find one good series. i've forgotten how amazing teen fiction can be. Stephanie Meyer has deceived me into thinking that everyone writes teen finction with the same unhealthy obsession with their male protagonists. =P
