i didn't listen to the album fully, so i didn't discover this song until on my home from school and the song came up on my ipod. the fun guitar intro hooked me immediately. then the groovin' rhythm, and then, John's slick and playful vocal delivery.
but what i love most about the song? what else but the lyrical content. this is the kind of music i miss from John. its pretty reminiscent of his older style of music. more pop than blues. and lyrics and feelings about an really regularly occuring feeling.
he talks about being okay with being lonely. he goes on saying that he's cool with it, and that possibly in the future he'll try again when he's ready. but what's really good, is that the songs a little deceiving. first you believe what he's saying about really being okay being by yourself. but then, i thought about it, and listened to the song again, and he sounds like he's trying to convince himself that he's okay with it instead of being really okay with it. this is especially noticable with very repeatative chorus line "I'm Perfectly Lonely". even just the fact that he used the word lonely tells him that its more a passing feeling he's trying to prolong than actually being in that okay mindset.
yay for real random emotions John! not that his new music isn't emotionally packed. just stuff like this song, where it's very casually said and accompanied with a laidback music track that i miss. he really sucked me in the song.
my favourite part of this song? probably the small harmony in the pre-chorus; where he goes 'nothin' to do, no one but me". i'm a sucker for good harmonies and that part just sounds so beautiful.
and the song sounds even better live.
