I don't know about people without I have heard this advice in my younger and more vulnerable years; but that ain't no certainty. That advice was given by my father, and he told the truth, mainly. I've been turning it over in my mind ever since, but mainly he told the truth.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."
That is all. I never tend to give judgement, except it has opened up many curious natures to me, or maybe bores. The mind--the abnormal mind, that is--loves normal minds, and my fellow collegians made me out to be a politician, which was mostly an unjust accusation, and I became privy to wild men, as I said before.

Aunt Polly--Tom's Aunt Polly, she is--and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before.
