OK ... this show is filmed in NZ and has the same producers as Xena. Therefore, I knew that I shouldn't have expected it to be true the books especially after reading the reviews of the first season, and yet, I now find myself entranced by the show. The first season isn't the greatest, and I think I hurt myself from the amount of cringing due to the mythology being so far from the books.
But, I have a bad habit of reading new fandoms (hence why I've now read the entire BoP comic series), so I was intrigued by Kahlan/Cara. I started by watching the Cara-centric episode Broken and couldn't really get into it. And then my friend and I watched the most recent episode, Princess, together and I realized that LOTS is merely the new Xena. With this new philosophy, I've been able to go back and rewatch the series with pleasure. I have to admit that I like the tv!Kahlan more than the book!Kahlan (she can fight!) and it is nice to see the tales rather than having to imagine all the small details from the books.
Here's hoping that there is another season (at least) to look forward to.
I was at the San Diego Comic Con three years ago when Sanctuary was just getting up and running. I remember visiting the booth and buying a hat to show my support for Amanda Tapping. I even went and downloaded the first webisode and watched it. However, I was a cheap college student and wasn't planning on buying anymore of the webisodes so the fandom disappeared from my mind. I then hear it's been picked up by SyFy (no, the name change does not make it more accessible to other viewers) but I still didn't watch it.
I then caught the marathon that SyFy was running right before the season 2 finale and found myself entranced by the character of Kate. Several months later, I sit down and start watching the series to find that Ashley Magnus is amazing (Best line: "Mom! I'm home!" This is said while running and gunning down creatures in the Sanctuary.) I also found myself appreciating Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping's character) more after getting more of her back story and seeing what she is willing to do for her life.
But Ashley dies(?) so the show has to replace the smartmouthed girl with a gun and they do so with Kate. Now, I understand that most fans of the show don't like Kate and I can understand why they don't like her. But, I like Kate. How can you dislike the bad guy turned good?
